Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hard to tell if this writer is coming up with a serious policy proposal or a scenario for a bargain bin Divided States of America novel.
Six Reasons Not to Panic About the Election
This summary really helped put my mind at ease after last night's confirmation. I suspect y'all could use it too.
No beer?! But if there's no beer, then there's no beef or beans!Going back a while: It's important not to reach cult mentality. It's one thing to cut out somebody from your life because we're talking about somebody so very toxic, or impossible to interact with, that this is your only option. It's another can o' cod entirely when that becomes your go-to answer for disagreements.
The term "cult mentality" isn't an exaggeration: That is how cults operate.
Portray your beliefs not just as something that most likely is true, but as sacred tenets that must never be questioned. When somebody points out a flaw in your thinking, or otherwise goes against your beliefs, cut that person out of your life. Eventually, you'll be surrounded only by people who believe the same things as you do. That way, you'll reinforce each other's convictions. One person will say, for instance, that Trump wants to repeat the Holocaust. Somebody else will agree that Trump definitely wants to, but just can't get away with it. It's obvious that Trump wants to repeat the Holocaust,
Anyone who asks "How do you know that Trump wants to repeat the Holocaust?" will be ostracized. Ostracizing somebody is easier than explaining how you "know" something that you have no real grounds for believing.
And that way, you end up like a typical cult member: "Only we are good. Our beliefs are obviously correct. Questioning us is evil, even if it's because what we say seems factually wrong."

I'm glad people reached out to me when I was The Fundamentalist and a homophobe.
I'd like to state that as that person, it was on ME.
The burden was on ME to change. Also, people being disgusted and revolted by my actions DID help. Because it was a nice moment to help remind me, "Wait, maybe I'm the asshole."
Gratitutous Mitchell and Webb.
I guess that's a relief if true? Also glad that Boston officials are telling people who might have had their ballots burned of the exact time frame and giving two contact methods for more information on whether you'll need to recast your votes.

I agree that appeals to empathy are worth trying. The problem is when that doesn't work, there's not many other directions to continue in.

No good. Impeachment requires two thirds of the senate, which will never happen, and starting an investigation without at least something weird going on is just asking for trouble.

My musician pageAppealing to a person's sense of empathy can be great when it works. The problem is, a lot of conservatives were never taught that they should have empathy for other human beings. Speaking as someone who grew up in a profoundly Republican household (my family still thinks George W. was one of the greatest Presidents of our time and my dad brags about his MAGA hat), conservative ideology has a lot of "Everyone for themselves" logic to it. I take care of me and you take care of you and if you're failing, that's on you.
I don't know how to explain to someone that they should care about other human beings.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.As has been mentioned repeatedly, impeachment requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate, which is a nonstarter in the current political climate. Arresting someone without impeaching them technically wouldn't remove them from the office, so you wouldn't be able to fill the seat with someone else — and that's besides the fact that now we're talking about arresting someone on trumped-up charges for political gain, which is not something we should be stooping to.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. Also a lot of these people tend to be Christians. They're Social Darwinists and they're Christians.
If Jesus can't convince them of the value of empathy, what hope do I have?

Allowing parents to pledge their dependents into a mock-theocratic fascist parallel state regardless of geographic lines would be worse. At least there's resistance as things are now.
Giving up and saying "just split it" is condemning a lot of people.
