Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Political "dynasties" in the USA simply mean families where multiple members have held political office of some kind. And only four families have had more than one member become POTUS: the Adams, the Harrisons, the Roosevelts, and the Bushes.
There's probably a bunch of politicians in other countries who would count as "dynasties" by that criteria. The Trudeaus in Canada for example would count.

Disgusted, but not surprisedNo, it doesn't count if they don't actually win.
The Clintons are still a "dynasty" though since Bill was POTUS (and a governor before that), HRC was a Senator and later a Secretary of State, and Bill's uncle served on a state legislature.
Honestly, the Netherlands probably has its own fair share of politicians too who'd qualify as dynasties if there's no actual law preventing this from happening.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThese kind of "dynasties" are near inevitable if there aren't any actual laws to prevent them from happening. It's simply because interest in politics tends to run in families. If you've got one person who achieves success in politics in your family, that's probably going to lead to others in the family getting interested too.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI remember an interview with Pelosi and one of two things that stuck out to me was that she got very passionate about talking about how her father, a New Jersey politician, had impressed strongly on her was a commitment to public service as a moral obligation.
The second thing was that while she was being interviewed over a meal she was casually swiping food from the reporter's plate. Wasn't even trying to hide it.

They think that poor people shouldn't be eating anything but sawdust. Cheap sawdust.
At least it's not as bad in the UK where the party in charge recently voted against feeding hungry children. The UK has a long history of hating children, after all.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWell,to be precise they won't fund free schools meals but the counsels will,I think in any other time no government would dream of scenario that generates such bad PR but with their super majorty and general election being 3 years ago they don't care if they're as seen as jerks because voters have the memories of goldfish apparently

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverThat's a way more complicated issue than it seems. Farmers can't just donate food since they literally cannot afford to do it. It takes a lot of hard fucking labor to get crops from the fields, after all. It's just cheaper to let it rot on the field than to donate it.

Really? Most Americans I talk to would be against political Dynasties. Heck, that was one of the arguments against Hillary back in 2016.
