Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

IIRC there was a cult in the 70s who, when faced with being caught, committed mass suicide by drinking poisoned kool-aid. That’s where the term comes from.
I don’t know the details very well, but that’s the gist of it.
Right, forgot it was another flavored drink.

Nothing. Flavor-ade, on the other hand, was the vector for the Jonestown Massacre poisoning. However, the brand name effect led to Kool-ade getting stuck with the stigma.
My musician pageDrinking the Kool-Aid — Flavor Aid was the drink that Jim Jones' cult in Jonestown drank to commit mass suicide in 1978. People mis-remember it as Kool-Aid since Kool-Aid is much more well known and "drinking the Kool-Aid" was in reference to Ken Kesey's use of LSD-tainted Kool-Aid to get people into the late-60's counterculture.

The damned queen and the relentless knight.Looking at the text of article III, any attempt to legislate 18 year terms would be of dubious constitutionality.
The relevant text is this:
The bolded text has traditionally been interpreted as a lifetime appointment unless they are removed for cause via a legal impeachment process.
Now of course we let Justices retire voluntarily, which the plain text of the constitution doesn't technically authorize justices to do that. Nor does the text explicitly bar term limits, but it doesn't authorize them either.
My personal read is that term limits could possibly be constitutionally valid, but wouldn't apply retroactively to any justice currently seated on the court. Since not following term limits that were understood when a justice was appointed is a much more reasonable interpretation of "bad behavior" then not following a change of rules after appointment.
In reality however it's a constitutional crises waiting to happen, since the Supreme Court would end up making a ruling on the validity of term limits...on the Supreme Court.
Like I said before, any way you slice it any change to the structure of the Supreme Court is going to require the Court to actually make a horrifically unpopular ruling. And that may never happen depending on how well Kavanagh and Gorsuch toe the line, or if a vacancy ends up opening up fairly early in what will hopefully be Biden's term.

I'd imagine it's relevant for this thread as well.
Agreed. That's only happening if the Court's legitimacy dies amongst non-Republicans. And even then there will probably be Democrats who lose their jobs over this.
Like the ACA it will be very brave of them to do.

Biden currently has between a 9 and 10 point lead.
Wow, 7.2 million people have voted in Texas
- that's 80% of 2016 turnout, and 42.4% of registered voters. (Note that this doesn't indicate who's favored, just saying more people voting in a democracy = good.)
From a few days ago, but CNN: US considering declaring major human rights organizations are anti-Semitic
The organizations include Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Oxfam with sources telling CNN that many diplomats believe a declaration would be dangerous and undercut US policy on countries such as China, Cuba or Venezuela where the Trump administration has joined with these groups, and relied on their work, to call out human rights abuses.

I'm still surprised that Texas, of all places, could possibly go blue.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrAfter George Floyd was killed at the hands of Minneapolis police officers in May, Gregory was forceful in his denunciation of the police.
"Many of us remember similar incidents in our history that accompanied the Civil Rights Movement, where we repeatedly saw Black Americans viciously brutalized by police on television and in newspaper photos," Gregory said at the time. "The horror of George Floyd's death, like all acts of racism, hurts all of us in the Body of Christ since we are each made in the image and likeness of God, and deserve the dignity that comes with that existence."
Think the Republicans are going to suddenly start yammering about separation of Church and state on this?

People have been talking about that for a while, due to demographics and other trends. I don't expect Texas will go blue this election, and even if it does it doesn't mean it will continue to go blue in the future, but even just turning it into a legitimate swing state would be very bad for the GOP since that means they'd have to spend more time and money there, which means less resources to go around elsewhere.
With the insane turnout, and the fact that Urban/Suburban Areas and Young Voters are the ones driving it, I'm leaning to thinking Biden will just barely take Texas at this point. But that's just my thinking and I wouldn't be surprised if Trump wins, just disappointed.
I mean, lets not expect Texas but if Biden takes it, it may just carry off a few GO Pers by pure rage.
