Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It is the same fear that sparks the Coronavirus Bill Gates MICROCHIP CONSPIRACY thing: Bill Gates has genuinely made plans to microchip people.
Because the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have been trying to help the Gavi Vaccine Alliance
and they encountered a big issue when it comes to vaccinating people: you can't tell if people have already been vaccinated or not without medical documentation.
One proposed solution are quantum dot tattoos/chips given with the vaccine which would allow for easily tracking basic medical records of infants for these foundations.
That is where the birthplace of that conspiracy comes from: the idea that nationwide identification of any sorts is preamble to mass control and the fact technology exists that is somewhat useful for identification.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesThose conspiracy theories also seem to underestimate just how many ways the government already has to track and identify you, and to couple that with things like bank and medical information. Democratic governments, if anything, are often at pains to raise barriers against that sort of data combinations, because especially in the digital era, it is already distressingly easy to do so.
The truth is, governments don't need to implant microchips through vaccination programs to track you, if they really wanted to, there would be plenty of existing options already. If anything, the danger on that front comes more from ubiquitous security cameras (now even provided by Amazon!), and facial recognition software. You never hear any conspiracies about Ring Video Dorbell or something, though. I guess they don't have the same scare factor as needles do.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesSo in potentially good news, Texas is seeing a very high turnout among youth voters among the mail-in and absentee ballots counted so far, much higher than 2016.
Data is also only available for like a third of the counties so it could be much higher.
Of course, there will certainly be very high GOP turnout on election day since they mostly vote in person, and I don't expect Biden to win there, but I still think it's worth noting.
EDIT: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-biden-final-debate-poll/
538 says early data suggests that the debate didn't have much of an impact, but that's good news for Biden.

I don't think anyone's accusing Conspiracy Theorists of being too clever or well-informed
Obviously all of you people are long since decided but after that debate last night there should be no more undecided voters. Even if you don't like Biden, it is abundantly clear that Donny has no plans. All he could talk about was how great America is, how great he is and insult Joe.
I think he was trying to do his little comedy routine that won him against Hillary only it didn't work nearly as well this time because he's no longer the wild card. Also Biden and the moderator sandbagged him like crazy.
Something else I realized, even the Qanon conspiracy crowd that thinks he's fighting an underground war with the evil democrats should be turned off because all those allegations he threw at Joe were so half hearted. Trump was just saying things and hoping they'd stick.
Just Having FunApparently some rural US states are doing well against COVID-19
and it might be due to them NOT being Republican-dominated
.
This Tweet-chain also makes a compelling case that North Carolina might become the graveyard of Trump's reelection prospects
, as there is a small but robust Biden lead and a number of Democratic officials ready to interfere with election manipulation attempts.
Well, I heard a new one today: the term "conspiracy" was made up by the CIA to mislead people into thinking conspiracies are not real.
And another good one: a Dutch conspiracy theorist found it suspicious he couldn't find the word "explosie" in a 9/11 report. Which was in English... so obviously he did not find that word in there. Brilliant!
How these conspiracy nuts don't turn on each other in their paranoia is beyond me.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesIs "explosie" Explosion (action), or Explosive (noun)...
Because if its the later it might not be there in the first place depending on how the sentences are structured... given that the only explosives present would have been the fuel air mixture from the plane...

That is one of the threats, thankfully the greater lead Biden has the less effective such methods are. And a landslide victory which is plausible per his +10 point lead would completely overwhelm them.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThis is preaching to the choir a bit, but Five Thirty Eight posted a video on their site talking about polling in general and why a lot of the narratives about polling in 2016 are iffy and how polling works in general.
The tl;dr is that state level polls are more prone to errors than national ones, and while the polls in 2016 did make some mistakes like not weighing for education levels (very important), they weren't as off most people claim. 538 in particular always held that a trump victory was plausible.
It's a useful video to recommend to someone who just blindly distrusts polls, assuming they'd listen.
