The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I have done it, I have cast a ballot thus pledging my soul to He Who Lurks In the Darkness, Devourer of God and Unborn Babies, Apostle of Malarkey, Joe Biden.

God is dead. God wemains dead. And you have kiwwed him.

All in all though, debate went as I expected the first one woulda gone: droll, but with Trump still being an idiot. Woulda been hilarious if Beelzebub had shown up to give him his blessing as he did Pence..

Re Texas: A distinction needs to be made between Democratic campaigning in Texas and Biden's specific campaign in Texas. From 538's analysis, Biden's campaign isn't spending a ton of money in Texas because, as M84 said, it's not critical to the campaign's overall strategy — winning it would be awesome, but losing it would not mean all that much compared to more critical states like NC, FL, PA, WI, and MI as far as getting into the White House goes. However, the Democratic Party as a whole would very much like to invest more effort into Texas' downballot races as there's a chance to gain at least Texas' House (and with it a chance to at least block Republican gerrymandering of electoral districts when they need to be redrawn for 2022).

It's a case of allied campaigns' end goals not quite lining up perfectly.

This is a random, kind of nitpicky thing, but thought it was worth posting in the interest of combatting disinformation.

So, above (I think posted last night? I can't keep track) Redmess was recapping the debate and on the discussion about race, referred to Trump criticizing Biden for his use of the term "superpredators".

The thing is, while it's true that this is something that Trump has started leveling against Biden, it's not something Biden actually said.

"Superpredators" was (in)famously a term used by Hillary Clinton when supporting the crime bill. Which Trump should know since he criticized her for that in the previous election.

I don't know whether this is Trump being addled or him trying to spread disinformation. I'd guess a combination of both myself. But we shouldn't help him.

I was just recapping what was said in the debate, it doesn't mean I state it as being true. But thanks for the fact check.

And I think it's possible Trump was just being confused. He seems to generally have trouble keeping policies apart, and it's the sort of mistake you could expect from someone who only has a passing familiarity with the subject. This is probably just what Trump (mis)remembered from his practice session.

I thought that switch was a half century earlier than that?

The last major realignment of political parties in the US was in the 1960s, over the Civil Rights Movement. Prior to that, in broad terms, the Democrats had been the party of the working class and the Republicans the party of business owners and the wealthy. When Democratic president Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, he lost support of racist whites in the South (which had been solidly Democratic since the end of the Civil War). In the 1968 election, Richard Nixon used this as a deliberate wedge issue in order to flip racist Southern whites to supporting the Republicans, in what's now known as the Southern Strategy. Between this and a few similar things (abortion rights was essentially invented as a partisan wedge issue in the '70s, for example), that's how the modern GOP became an unholy amalgamation of white supremacists, theocratic reactionaries, and small-government plutocrats.

Obviously this is a super tldr and I'm ironing over a ton of nuance, but that's the gist of it.

When Trump kept asking Biden "who built the cages", a good comeback would've been: "Who kept using the cages?"

"Just because someone built them, it doesn't mean that someone else has to keep using them!"

Trump should spend years in a dog cage himself and see how he likes it.

Trump is placing blame on Obama for the cages even existing in the first place, that's all.

Completely ignoring that he hasn't done anything himself to get rid off them, keeps using them, and jails all kids (including toddlers and infants) that crosses the southern border (illegally and legally) on a daily basis, while also deporting their parents back to other countries with zero chances of ever finding them again, leaving these kids all alone in dog cages for years until they are old enough to be deported as well...

The GOP are monsters like that.

[up] They for sure as heck weren't constructed to contain kids, toddlers or babies in them for years on end until they reach legal age of deportation, that's for certain.

(Also, please oh law almighty, don't play "both-sides" in this topic, there is no way it will end well for anyone who tries to justify this evil in any way shape or form...)

The construction of the cages was indeed during the Obama administration, meant ot be temporary holding areas.

As seen here, hey by far predated Trump.

However his "Zero Tolerance" policy certianly made it worse and they became a bit more than temporary cages which were meant to hold someone for tops 72 hours.

They were not literal dog cages, as far as I know.

And it is definitely true that Obama had a hand in creating these immigrant camps and deporting people, and Biden is clearly uncomfortable admitting that much.

I think Biden reacted in a far better manner than what's being suggested here, deflecting to Trump's use of cages wouldn't have been a good idea. Hypocrisy just helps the worst candidate, it's better to acknowledge your guilt and promise to do better.

Obama's immigration policies were not good, they weren't as bad as Trump but Biden should strive to be better than that.

The cages were built as a detention center to keep illegal immigrants in while.processing their cases...because, y'know illegal border crossing is still a crime. The intention was to separate the children from whoever was with them long enough to confirm that they hadn't been kidnapped or were being abused. All perfectly reasonable policies.

The issue is that Trump started separating all families and detaining border crossers indefinitely, pushing the system to a breakthrough ng point while also basically treating everyone there like fucking rats.

The past is the past. Biden just had to reiterate what his own policy would be. I didn't watch so I have no idea whether or not he did that.
