The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump keeps talking as if Biden had actual power himself as Vice President.

And he keeps saying "politician" as if he isn't one.

Trump just kept going “Why didn’t you get it done”.

Biden’s response?

Trump: 'I'm the least racist person in the room'

Biden: 'He's the most racist president in the room.' and 'He has a dogwhistle the size of a foghorn'

Trump is absolutely furious. He's trying the crime bill.

Biden is allowed to respond to the crime bill: The crime bill was passed in the 80s by 100% of senators. It was a mistake. He's spent his time since then trying to fix that mistake, and launches into his drug treatment plan.

Trump: claiming he got nothing done during Obama's eight years. He's all talk and no action.

Biden starts listing all the actions they did to start the process.

Trump insists on repeating his question 'why didn't you get it done...'

Biden: We had a Republican congress. That's it. We had a Republican congress.

The dead silence after "We had a Republican Congress." Wow.

If that's not a meme by tomorrow...

That's base pandering. Read articles about why his voters are sticking with him and inevitably you'll see someone who says, "Because he's not a politician!"

Not sure how that works after being in the highest political office for four years, but they seem to believe it.

He managed to talk about air pollution in a way that felt so dam racist, with the implication that it’s not the air that’s dirty, that it’s the people.

You know, I somehow have even less respect for Trump after seeing this debate. He managed to look like a total D-bag for most of it, and then his 'good' comment. I'm actually glad he made that comment, because it shows something very important: He isn't just a raving, selfish bafoonish clown...he is bone-chillingly evil.

Trump doesn't understand how the environmental policies can be good politically.

Yeah, the tiny windows thing was weird.

Did Trump just claim wind is very expensive and "kills all the birds"?

Yeah, Trump has previously claimed that wind power causes cancer.

Biden is now willing to interrupt Trump, as mics clearly aren’t being cut.

My mom (otherwise a centrist/center-left), thinks that Trump is doing competently tonight, and that he's proving to his base and undecided voters that "he's not a radical".

I can't tell if she's being contrary, or if she's had too much to drink tonight. Because I don't see know Trump is doing anything other than bad in the eyes of anyone other than his base.

Just a quick point - the "coyotes are bringing in illegals" comment is an actual term for someone smuggling people in from Central and South America.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"

Wind is expensive, kills all the birds, very intermittent. The fumes that comes up when these windmills is worse than natural gas. Natural gas is very clean!

Biden confirms he won't stop fracking because a transition is needed from current energy to clean energy. So, it would still need to exist until the transition is completed.

Trump keeps accusing Biden of claiming he wanted to ban fracking. Biden's challenged him to prove it by putting out a video. Trump's accepted the challenge. Biden points out he said he was against fracking on federal land.

Trump thinks he's won because Biden admitted that he will transition from oil to clean technology. "Ooh! Oooh! Oooh!" he keeps saying to the camera, which is really creepy and makes him sound like a cooing pigeon. But Trump has asked Texas to remember that Biden's coming for their oil.

And it’s over, Biden put his mask up strait away, while Trump hasn’t bothered to put a mask on.

Looking at post-debate spin, Trump seems to have been perceived as more focused and on-topic, bit Biden also seems to have had a much better debate than his other debates.

[up][up] There are a lot of green jobs appearing in Texas, people in oil who want to still have a job in 30 years may like the idea of transition support.
