The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I for one am pretty worried on the shitshow that is likely to unfold.

I'm not sure Trump has a shot at doing any better, aside from hoping Biden makes a big mistake. And he's presumably practicing with avoiding just that.

Well it’s either Trump doing a repeat of last time or Biden making a mistake.

Either way it’s going to be a shitshow and likely a national embarrassment... again.

I asked earlier if we knew if Trump was practicing or not because at this point with so many reports of Republicans jumping ship?

It may be that he is so reluctant at training, or worse doing so poorly at it they took it as the last straw. His behavior at rallies (how no one "loves" him) is cringy and funny but it may belie the fact that in moments where people need him to fess up he is just. Failing at the bare minimum.

Of course this is armchair psychology to the max but hey.

God, if this debate is as bad as last time, then the entire system needs to overhauled.

One of his key debate prep people (Chris Christie) has suffered serious from COVID after he was infected (possibly by Trump himself), so he may not have anyone to practise with.

Per NBC, the amount of debate prep Trump has done is: not much.

In fact he's done even less than last time. His staff don't expect him to take their advice and instead attack Biden on his son and China.

I doubt that there is only one person in the whole debate issue and all he needs to debate someone is to rehearse how to answer questions. I doubt Christ Christie being unavailable means Trump has no one to practice debates against...a literal assistant with flash cards can ask the questions. But if it does I find the process even more bizarre.

Trump potentially having given a deadly disease to the last person to do debate prep with him may very well mean he’s not got anyone to practise with.

Plus debate prep with Trump is more than just asking him questions and having him practise answers, it’s standing in for the opponent and critically it’s also managing Trump such that he doesn’t get board after 20 second and decide to switch on Fox. I doubt there are many people at all who can keep Trump on track long enough to get through a practise session, that’s before we get to people with enough debate experience to serve as even a basic substitute for Biden.

I agree. But if you tell me Chris Christie is the man who can do this I will also narrow my eyes and shake my head.

Trump is absolutely going to try to sidestep all questions and instead grill Biden on the hunter emails and on court packing. I just hope Biden is prepared for that.

Trump is going to behave badly.

Biden will either perform at his prior level (i.e decent but not great) or will do better because he's used to it.

And the public will not be pleased with Trump's behavior thus losing him the debate.

At this point there's no point in assuming that things will go differently, Trump's position is bad and it's not going to get better.

IMHO, no. I've come to believe the format was just fine. Trump blustered, talked over biden and behaved like a spoilt kid... and the public largely believed Biden won the debate. I think we're just trying to paper over Trump's flaws too much at this point by lending an air of credence and dignity that he just doesn't have.

Let him flail and bluster.

[up] Thing is, even a lot of people who support Biden considered this debate to be a national disgrace due to Trump's behaviour.

Speaking as someone from not the U.S, everything Trump does is pretty sad to behold. Not just the debate. So I would not be concerned of this act in particular being perceived as extra disastrous.

They said the moderator would have a mute button to silence either candidate should it become necessary. How much use do you think it'll get?

Parable Since: Aug, 2009

I think they mute for the first two minutes of someone's answer. So Trump can still interrupt all he wants, he just has to wait two minutes into an answer for the audience to hear it.

God, if this debate is as bad as last time, then the entire system needs to overhauled.

Ever since the League of Women Voters stopped running the debates, they've been cheap slugfests.

On the flip side, of course, no Republican in their right mind would go for a debate run by a progressive organization.

They've said that the candidates will have a two-minute period to talk on every question with the other candidate beind muted for that time. So the mute button will be in heavy use because that's how it will work at first.

Part of the problem with the mute button, I think, is that the moderator won't want to appear biased. This is actually part of why the rules weren't followed much before, I'd argue: The moderator doesn't want to make it look like they're favoring one candidate over the other and the candidates therefore know that they'll be given a lot of leeway to break the rules.
