Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

McTurtle, like Trump, is a perfect example of a real-life Jerkass, except smarter.
It still amazes me that both of them still have people willing to stand by them.
"Wow, no Mega Togekiss in Legends Z-A. Or any non-Froslass new Sinnoh Mega Evolutions. Round of applause, everybody." - DawnWell, it does take a certain degree of low cunning to realize that things like "rules" don't actually prevent you from doing whatever you want if nobody else is willing or able to do anything except whine at you.
Emphasis on "low".

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.Mc Turtle is probably doing this out of sheer pettiness and spite at this point.
Most likely due to knowing that he is a dead man walking (he is 78 years old and judging from the pictures, in a deteriorating state of health already.) So this judge nomination is just his giant middle finger towards anyone that isn't on "his team" and will remain as such long after his departure if the judge gets the spot.
The fear of legal consequences shrinks surprisingly fast when one is standing one foot at death's doorstep (from old age, disease or both) after all...
Well, Mc Connell has all but managed to secure a strong conservative majority in the SC for the next few decades (and crucially denied this to the Democrats), I doubt he loses any sleep about the bad example he set with his behaviour, especially if the SC restricsts or bans abortions.
Mc Connell, hard as it may be to accept, acts on principle. He really believes that some people are just better and more deserving than others of positions of responsibility, and a proportional degree of compensation. He believes in what he thinks of as "meritocracy", and that for the most part, people rise (or fall) to the level they deserve. He's what we would call an "authoritarian."

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Oh yeah, Giuliani promised to that "interviewer" he was going to eat a bat.
Wait a minute... has no standards to speak of... no dignity... messes around with bats... finds himself in compromising situations...
Oh my god, Giuliani is turning into Randy Marsh.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesOn the debate, there's no way Biden will walk away. He's much too much a gentleman and professional for that.
And Trump is not going to do his stalker thing, or he would have done it the first time around. That's just not his strategy with men.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesThere is a Mac Donald's cheeseburger in a cage attached to Trump's podium. It's very effective at keeping him in place.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Apparently Trump held a rally in Eerie, Pennsylvania, where he told the crowd he was only here because of the "plague", and told them there was no way he'd come there if not for that.
I think he's losing his touch. Way to insult your own supporters.
Trump also told the same crowd that if Sleepy Joe becomes president, politics will become boring again and people will lose interest in it. Which frankly, after four years of Trump, sounds amazing. We could indeed do with much less interesting politics in the US.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesHopefully not too boring since that's how we got Trump in the first goddamned place and, ah, I really don't trust my [gag] fellow voters to remember that fact in 2024.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.I don't think that Evil Turtle is a Jerkass, more like a totally amoral power exploiter/Chessmaster.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt doesn’t really make sense tbh as Obama had the biggest peace overture to Iran in the past 50 years and the biggest boon to their government. Biden winning is probably the most beneficial outcome to Iran.
Once again, it was a false flag.
They were most likely trying to discredit Trump by posing as his supporters and very publicly intimidating voters. It makes perfect sense that Iran would try to undermine his campaign in such a way.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang

Senate Judiciary Committee advances Amy Coney Barrett's nomination to the Supreme Court despite a Democrat boycott; Republicans denied Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court in spring of 2016, with McConnell arguing that the new president should pick a judge since it was election year.
Glad to see Evil Turtle only has compunctions about things when Democrats are doing them.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my Tumblr
