The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Thankfully it does seem like people on the ground are attempting to get the vote out and are donating to campaign drives, but it's true a lot of media, even partisan ones, don't quite give them their dues.

Exxon Mobile: Trump didn't have a phone call with our CEO.

This after Trump said he did during a fundraiser.

That'd be like Trump saying he had a "very productive phone call" with Ozwell Spencer...

[up][up]Umbrella was disbanded between 3 and 4, so aren't responsible for 6. They are also more competent than Trump so one point in the fictional evil corporation's favour.

But yeah, it seems like there aren't a lot of brands willing to associate with Trump at this rate. Granted in this example Trump was making up a hypothetical scenario and Exxon was making it clear that it was just a hypothetical scenario, but it's telling how damaging they think an association with Trump would be.

[up][up]Umbrella's actually a hilariously incompetent corporation, particularly when it comes to safety protocols and proper vetting of employees. It's much like Trump in that it's hard to tell sometimes whether malice or incompetence (or both) is the driving force behind their latest fuckup. The entire reason they got disbanded was because their latest fuckup was too big to cover up, leading to all of their contracts being cancelled.

Whilst I might have some sympathy, I despise the general "it's cancer there's nothing anyone can do" sentiment that everything he says there expresses.

North Jersey Record: Passaic sets up mailboxes for homeless people, and it could be life-changing

Among homeless advocates, some know it as the "postal paradox," because people are trapped in a Catch-22: Homeless people can't get the help they need because they are homeless. Driver's licenses, SNAP debit cards and even paychecks typically require a mailing address.

Enter the city of Passaic, which is now providing secure mailboxes to people living on the streets.

Passaic has installed mailboxes at its Dignity House on Broadway, the city's resource center for the homeless.

Des Moines Register: Auditor: Iowa misallocated at least $21 million in COVID-19 funds

Iowa used the money from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act to help pay for a new accounting system.

Sand and the U.S. Treasury Department's inspector general last week advised Gov. Kim Reynolds' administration that the software is not an allowable use of the money, according to a review Sand released Monday.

Sand also questioned the earmarking of $448,449 in federal funds to pay the salaries of 21 of Reynolds' staffers between March 14 and June 30 and said the state could be liable to a repayment order if not enough of the work was related to the pandemic.

And here's a bit of news from the Senate races. In Iowa, there was a debate between Joni Ernst (R), and Theresa Greenfield (D) - Joni Ernst botched a question on the price of agricultural commodities, which is apparently a big deal in Iowa, with its farm industry. Also David Perdue (R), in Georgia, mocked Kamala Harris's name in a racist way during a Trump rally.

Florida shatters opening day record for early voting – The trend continues a record-setting pace in the battleground state that is viewed as a must-win for President Donald Trump.

It seems like when early votes and mail-in votes are counted varies a lot between states, and that raises a concern for me. The early (and esp mail-in) votes are expected to be heavily Democratic, and the election-day votes to ge heavily Republican.

If the election-day votes are counted first in key states, then Trump could declare victory based on them, before the Democratic-leaning mail-in votes have bern counted. Esp in places like Pennsylvania where mail-in ballots can be received after election day.

Pretty sure he can 'declare' victory all he wants, the final counts still have to be certified by the respective state election officials and it's not final until the Electoral College meets. Declaring victory has nothing to do with election law about who actually wins.

Right. The winner isn't actually chosen on November 3, contrary to popular belief. The winner is chosen when the electors meet in mid-December. All that happens (in the media, at least) between those dates is sound and fury, signifying nothing.
