Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Who was that?
I've just found out about Cain being fired for his politics and added it to the Live-Action TV section of Role-Ending Misdemeanor without going into any real detail.

George Reeves, predecessor to Christopher Reeve, who played Superman The Adventures of Superman back in the radio/black-and-white TV days. His Superman radio show did an episode about the KKK that did a lot to expose their true nature to the world.

So I'm not sure why, but the top left ad in the You Tube app has stopped being Trump and started being Biden. I'm guessing either Trump's running out of money and couldn't pay for the spot, or Biden outbid him.
Another interesting thing, Trump's ads were half attack ads and half "look out how great and loved I am" ads (based on the thumbnails and titles at least), while Biden's are almost all neutral. Not as attention-grabbing, but very much not just selling "vote for me because I'm not Trump".
There are actually a lot of Trump-supporting celebrities. Take a look at this list and shake your head.
Original Position Fallacy + privilege. They don't have to worry about going broke, being killed by police, or not being able to afford medical care.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"He typically doesn't have much support among A-listers and the Hollywood establishment. I mean, who actually values Scott Baio's political endorsement? Covid's wiped out a big portion of the demographic that has seen and can remember an episode of Charles in Charge.
For every Trump celebrity endorsement, there's like twenty for Biden. I'm not worried.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Unfortunately, doing that could lead some parents to vote for their voting-aged children (I know we have a couple posters here who have to keep their votes concealed) because they "know" how they're going to vote anyway. Remember - the signature isn't just to reassure Republicans - it's also meant to reassure voters that they're the only ones who can vote in their name.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Yeah that’s the one genuine risk of vote-by-mail, you get head-of-household voting, where an entire household ends up being made to vote the way of one individual in the household.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI don't think the signature matching thing is necessarily voter suppression, it's one of those ideas that sounds perfectly reasonable. We use signatures to approve official documents all the time, after all, and there they work just fine. They even work fine when you don't sign something in person with the authority asking for it.
I think the problem with signatures for voting is that the requirement for matching them is simply too stringent, that is where the system keeps failing. This could just as easily be overcaution as malice, and is probably a bit of both.
A much better system would be using something that doesn't change, like a fingerprint.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesThat one jumped out at me, too.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. Not on that list: Toby Turner, a faded YouTube personality whose comedy I used to enjoy very much.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It does disproportionately catch people from certain groups: those with a range of physical, mental and learning disabilities; those from deprived backgrounds who have poor writing skills; trans and gender non-conforming people; people for whom English isn't their native language; and women.
It also disproportionately hits military personnel and overseas voters.
