Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump has rejected California's request for disaster assistance after the recent devastating fires.
Feinstein gives maskless hug to Graham after the Senate Judicial Committee's hearing on ACB is over.
Fred Rogers, the star of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, and one of the friendliest men you will have ever met. Very few people actively hate him.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."@Redmess Mister Rogers (Fred Rogers) was a children's show host on PBS. He spoke in a very calm manner and didn't talk down to children (notably, he was even willing to discuss the assassination of JFK on a kid's show IIRC, and he was able to pull it off).
He also was an incredibly kind person in real life, to nearly Messianic Archetype levels. For example, he had a fishtank he would feed and would announce whenever he was feeding it. This is because a blind girl wrote to him that she was worried his fish was starving.
He also had a homosexual black man on his crew and saw to it that he was treated well. He also gave a speech about how everyone deserves love while facing that person off-camera. The man said "I felt like you were talking to me", and Fred responded "I was talking to you. I've always been".

Leviticus 19:34Pretty much the closest thing Americans have to a secular national saint. He was a beloved children's TV personality who hosted an educational show for decades, championing learning, kindness, and understanding.
My sig line is actually a quote of his.
Oh. Biden at his town hall meeting, apparently.

And as one can see, a lot of us grew up happily watching Mr. Rogers. So to use the comparison as an insult is baffling at best and more likely backfiring.
#BidenWonTheDebate is trending on Twitter now.
Trump's team is attacking their townhall's host. I get the feeling it didn't go well over there.

Not hard to see why either. Just some sample tweets:
"I'm confused. Has Donald Trump been vowing to make suburban neighborhoods safe from Mr. Rogers?"
"Republicans like presidents who boink porn stars while their 3rd wife is pregnant with a 5th child from different women & pay to cover it up. I like presidents who are more like Mr. Rogers, a decent man of faith who taught children how to have empathy & show love for one another."
"I prefer Mr Rogers to Caligula."
Mr Rogers being an insult makes sense in the sense of toxic masculinity.
A real man is not kind, not concerned for you, not soft spoken.
He is a shoulder first, loud, rude-means-business steak-as-diet man's man.
It might have worked.
Last Century.
Before a good chunk of Mr Rogers kids became voters.
"You can reply to this Message!"And the funny thing is that Biden actually stayed behind after the town hall was over to keep talking to audience members who wanted some clarifications on some of his answers, which is such a Mr. Rogers move.
Also, Biden's townhall was in Pennsylvania, where Mr. Rogers is from. The swing state where he is beloved.

Pete Buttigieg responded to the Mr. Rogers comparison:
"Just imagine turning on the TV, seeing your president, and feeling your blood pressure go down instead of up."
