Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"I don't think so… That's where the administration's willing to go," he said. "My members think what we laid out, a half a trillion dollars, highly targeted, is the best way to go. So that's what I'm gonna put on the floor. "
Mc Connell referred to the ongoing negotiations between Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on a stimulus package. "That's not what I'm gonna put on the floor," he said.
Really, really hope this leads to his losing come election day.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Depends if the new Senate Majority Leader is less of a ideological lunatic.
But I'll speak for Kentucky here, in no way is there any universe where Mc Grath wins and the Democrats don't take the Senate.
She's the longest shot of this election.

Alternatively, they have an idea to get rid of mail in ballots en masse to try to win state ballots for lesser candidates but not Trump ala Judges.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. It's the traditional propaganda technique of "muddying the waters", making it difficult for low engagement voters to remember which boxes were legit and which weren't. That creates an opening afterward to declare boxes in Democratic districts (in Republican states) illegitimate.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. The article was saying that conservative and Trump appointed judiciaries are doing away with decades of established precedence that allow state (and maybe smaller) governments to effectively handle pandemic response, in what is obviously in the name of present day Republican partisanship.

Depends if the new Senate Majority Leader is less of a ideological lunatic.
I've already criticized this sentiment before but it's worth repeating. Mcconnel could not do any of what he wants if his party wasn't behind it. If he gets voted out of office but the Republicans control the Senate then they will simply replace him with someone who will behave the same way.
Why? Because nothing he does is lunacy. Mc Connel understands that the point of power is efficacy, not norms, and certainly not pointless displays of principle that achieve nothing. He does what he does because letting Democrats get what they want does absolutely nothing to help the Republicans.
It makes perfect sense to ruthlessly push for partisan advantage, and that Democrats haven't done it in the past is why they've done poorly.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangYeah the only way you get a more compromising Republican leader in the senate is if they loose an absurd amount of seats. If Dems somehow walk away with 57 seats (including Kentucky) then you could see maybe Romney as minority leader and compromise start to be talked about, or the remaining Republican senators could double-down and pick the likes of Tom “no quarter” Cotton.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI think people underestimate how much Mc Connell pushed things through on his own. Mind you, they don't seem to understand how party bosses work or the level of blackmail, economic abuse, or favor trading goes on behind the scenes. Its why he owns Kentucky despite being a Senator.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. One thing I keep on thinking as I look at the Senate, is that Democrats are running great candidates and narrowing the score in so many states where people thought they wouldn't stand a chance. A slight tilt in their favor in the final weeks would be the difference between a 50-51 seat Senate majority and a 57-seat majority and its nerve-wracking. Like there are 5-6 races where Democrats could do better than they have in decades and fall just short.
