The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's the way it's supposed to be but we saw Roberts do NOTHING to keep impeachment on the rails. He's still part of the conservative system and the fact he can't be removed doesn't mean he's not taking orders from the Republican party.

Bold of you to assume that Roberts was following marching orders from party leaders. As opposed to Roberts personally opposing Trump's impeachment and thus not feeling particularly inclined to keep it on the rails.

Again: Conservative Justices ruling in favor of conservative ideology is not a sign that they are slaves to Mitch McConnell's will. It is a sign that they are conservative. It's not a conspiracy when Republicans support Republican things.

There is no one singular bad guy within the GOP who is responsible for all of the bad, and to whom all other Republicans are unwilling servants. Republicans gonna Republican, and they all need to be combatted.

I think your argument that the Supreme Court is not beholden to the Republican Party misses that there are many ways other than losing their job that they can be influenced.

But hey, that's just me and you're right I could be biased.

Fortunately, that law change doesn't matter, because of American Federalism. Specifically, social workers who discriminate on any of these three bases can still be sued into poverty in federal court.

That doesn't make it better.

It took me a long time to realize so many laws just exist to legalize and normalize hate. I feel disgusted with myself for those days I believed in "liberties" like this and the "it is important to tolerate even beliefs you find repugnant."

It's a lot easier to buy into that if said beliefs don't actually target oneself. Kind of like how it's a lot easier to separate art from the artist when the artist isn't specifically hating on your group.

I would hope I would have the same opinion when I was specifically targeted. I'd much rather have genuinely believed something that was wrong than just having been suffering apathy for another person's suffering.

Were republicans punished for not voting Trump in 2016?

Like Ted Cruz is still in a position despite that convention stunt.

Listening to my family spouting conspiracy theories on how Pelosi wants to dump the 25th on Biden so she can climb up the ladder and become VP.

Does she think that, if the 25th Amendment is invoked, the Speaker of the House automatically becomes VP? Because that's not how it works. First off, the 25th Amendment can't actually remove a sitting President, it just allows them to be declared unfit to serve and for the Vice President to exercise the powers of the Presidency as Acting President, which is a subtle but important legal difference - when you become Acting President, you still hold your previous position, which in this case means the Vice Presidency would still be occupied, while when you become President, you leave your previous position. Second, even if it did remove the President (which again, it does not), the Vice President immediately becomes President (and not acting president) and can nominate a new Vice President for Senatorial approval. Third, even if both the President and Vice President were removed, nobody else in the line of succession actually becomes President. Everyone after VP becomes Acting President. Fourth, the 25th Amendment process has to be initiated by the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet, so Kamala and most of Biden's appointees would have to be in on this plot as well even if the rest of the plot actually worked.

I just got a top left corner You Tube ad with the title "Nancy's plan for President Harris". Didn't watch it, but the "Pelosi is planning to invoke the 25th to take out Biden" theory seems to be coming directly from the Trump campaign.

They don't have the benefit of decades of smear campaigns already laying the groundwork for them this time.

AFAICT this conspiracy theory comes in two flavors:

1: Harris and Pelosi are conspiring to put a Gasp!Horrors! Woman of Color! into the Presidency.

2: Pelosi is trying to make herself President (Despite never having shown any sign of wanting to be) and will do it by getting rid of Biden because since, despite having been born in Oakland to parents who were both legal residents at the time, Kamala Harris is not a Real American Citizen.

Twitter, Facebook face blowback after stopping circulation of NY Post story: Controversial story proved fertile testing ground for social media disinfo policies.

A few stories debunking the Biden "scandal" (linked in the Ars piece):

The central lie in the story is that Shokin was investigating Burisma at the time Biden demanded him fired, which suggests a quid pro quo deal with Burisma. This is not true. And that's just the basis of the story, pretty much everything is fishy about it.

Was Burisma paying Hunter Biden in an attempt to influence his father? Yes. Did Hunter deliver that influence? No. Biden did the opposite of what Burisma wanted.

This is basically the real contention, I think. While Burisma didn't succeed in influencing Biden through his son, they certainly seem to have tried, and Hunter shouldn't have gotten involved for that very reason in the first place. It is politically sloppy, if nothing else.

White House informally endorses letting pandemic spread unchecked: On background, the White House says that herd immunity plan reflects its thinking.

Yeah, I don't blame Harris for cancelling when the unofficial official policy is to just do nothing and let the virus run rampant.
