Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

To be fair, you can't expect people to read 200 page policy proposals either. There needs to be a middle ground there: don't ignore it, but break it down to a size people can consume within a reasonable amount of time, and that is understandable to laymen (you really don't want to foist political jargon on the voting public in general).

Yeah that's important to note, like I'm not fond of Clinton AT ALL, but saying she had no policies is just bull.
You know, it's ironic that people like to claim the Media was all for Clinton when ironically coverage of Trump and lack of for Clinton's policies was a reason for 2016's result.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Yeah, I agree with the above several posts.
In decent news, NPR reports that Virginia voters will have some more time to register after the voter registration site went down briefly on the last day of registration
.
I'd argue it's probably more accurate to say that the media Loves-to-Hate Trump (Fox News excepted). For the most part, they don't quite "like" him, but they do quite like complaining and Trump gives them a lot to complain about. They are, almost literally, professional complainers.
Trump is also able to utilize No Such Thing as Bad Publicity to great effect, which means that the media doesn't have to like him-they still exist in a symbiotic relationship with him. They profit off of complaining, Trump profits off of being complained about.
So, saying the media is biased for or against Trump is a sort of half-truth. In perspective, the media seemingly hates Trump. In terms of practical effect, talking negatively about Trump is still talking about him and that helps Trump quite a bit.
Leviticus 19:34Out of curiosity, what do each of you mean when you say 'the media'? The cable networks? Individual journalists? Newspaper? Opinion show hosts? The owners and corporate boards?
By most definitions, both Ben Shapiro and 538 are 'the media.' If you tell me both of those hate Trump then I'm gonna give you a sideways look.
I mailed our family's ballots today. Rather than risk leaving them in our mailbox, I took them to the local post office. So, now we just need to check in with the state's ballot website every so often to confirm receipt. We also get emails when they are received.
We did our best. I'm going to assume there's no canvassing this year, at least not in-person, I detest phone banking, and I'm in a COVID risk group so I'm not stepping up as a poll worker. So that's all she wrote. I can now officially tune out the election until the results come in.
Can, but won't, of course.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
I don't even live in the US and I can only barely tune out the the election. It's both too exciting and frightening.
It’s frustrating. One candidate is grossly unqualified and should have never become president in the first place. This should not be a close race, but Trump has a cult behind him and the media refuses to take their attention off of him. He should have just remained a joke candidate in 2016.

Lindsey Graham Reminiscences about the "Good ol Days in Segregation".

Whelp, Just more confirmation he's a douche.
Watch SymphogearSo the New York Post is really trying to generate an October Surprise around Hunter Biden, huh?
I've heard that he may be involved with human trafficking, but I've looked it up and didn't find any news or even any conspiracies saying so; I conclude that this is some conspiracy theory that isn't even peddled very often.
Do not obey in advance. On a related note, apparently in a racial discrimination case decided by Amy Barrett she determined that being called the N word by a supervisor did not constitute a hostile or abusive work environment.
Videos show closed-door sessions of leading conservative activists: ‘Be not afraid of the accusations that you’re a voter suppressor’ – The footage, covering dozens of hours of Council for National Policy meetings in February and in August, offers an inside view of the group’s obsessions, fears and plans at a pivotal moment in the conservative movement.
Don't have more than that. Thought I still had some free articles left

While I share your feelings in-general I think it's worth pointing out that it is not actually a close race. Biden has a 10+ point lead, in a national environment as polarized as ours that's an incredible landslide.
Now, obviously the election hasn't happened yet so we can't call it a landslide just yet but if the polling proves accurate (or if Biden overperforms!) then it won't be close at all.

At some point, you need to discuss whether demonstrably untrue claims against politicians should be prosecuted as libel. The pendulum has swung too much towards the "freedom to defame" side of the equilibrium, there.
