Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's more that the media always wants a damn horse-race between more closely matched candidates. They want a tighter race since that means higher ratings.
They also think that Trump will bring in higher ratings, for better or worse. His town halls are fascinating in the way train wrecks are fascinating.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI can't wait to hear right wing apologists keep on going off about "the emails" all over again /s
For real though, I think it's a little late for Trump's campaign to try and push this as an "October Surprise". Keep in mind also that the last election's October Surprise was not about Hillary's emails - that had already been in the news for months. The October Surprise was the FBI announcing their investigation into the emails being leaked.
Trump's campaign already tried and failed to push this story a year ago, and it didn't take. As has been mentioned before, Trump was impeached for trying to coerce Ukraine into fabricating evidence about this 'controversy'. The time is long past for this sort of thing to make a difference. Of course it won't stop the media from trying to cover it to get those precious ratings

It's not just tabloid trash, it is a right wing propaganda paper, basically.
I'm not surprised they are doubling down on that story now. It's basically all they have left to go after.
Told you Giuliani would show his ghoulish face again sooner or later. This is his dirty operation, clearly.
As for the media, they are also the ones responsible for propping Trump up during his early career. We may defend the media now that Trump is attacking it so harshly, but really, US media has some big issues.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesThey also think that Trump will bring in higher ratings, for better or worse. His town halls are fascinating in the way train wrecks are fascinating.
It's especially galling since Trump is their bloody enemy - he's been working on delegitimising the American media pretty much since he came to office and nonsense like this just makes it easier for him.

Yeah, to be honest, the media in the US and the way people see the news have a lot of responsibility for the way things have turned. Everything has to be a spectacle. News can't just give news, and people just can't watch news, information is not good enough. They need entertainment or they don't care. People like Trump thrive in that environment. Everything is a spectacle to him.

Trump’s Probe Into ‘Unmasking’ Conspiracy Ends With No Wrongdoing Found: Report
"A federal investigation meant to target Obama administration officials for “unmasking” the names of individuals in classified intelligence reports ended recently without finding any wrongdoing that the Trump administration could use as political ammunition, The Washington Post reported Tuesday."
Clearly a deep state conspiracy to force the Federal Government to be competent.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.I care about what's trending on Twitter only slightly more than I care about what Q Anon thinks.
