The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Comparing Trump to Nancy Pelosi and Keith Olbermann, really? Really? Nancy Pelosi tore up a speech once so now she's on equal footing with Trump? Keith Olbermann isn't even an elected official.

Google knows when you vote, clearly.

This sort of thing happens to me sometimes as well. Google will somehow know what I am going to search for and suggest it before I finish typing the xecond word, even when it isn't obvious. Those algorithms are pretty spooky sometimes.

The terrorists plotting to kidnap/murder Governor Whitmer also considered targeting Virginia Governor Ralph Northham.

I wouldn't really have expected any more from Romney. If he didn't identify with the GOP on some level, he wouldn't still be a member of it.

Not that it makes the bothsiding any less bad.

Our ballots arrived in the mail. Yay! I'm going to take them to the post office or the county drop box by hand. Haven't decided which yet.

The Klan is terrorizing people in Tennessee by leaving "Social Visit Cards" at known Biden-Supporter Homes, warning them not to make their next visit a "Business Call". The police in Tennessee are currently saying to ignore it.

All I can say right now is, people in Tennessee, be careful out there.

[up] If the local authorities are ignoring it, does that mean that the people exposed to this harassment and death threats are allowed to defend themselves as they see fit once the klan does come around a second time to commit whatever arson/murder/abuse/vandalism/lynching they intend to do during that moment?

I mean, for crying out loud, if they aren't, then isn't that basically painting the cops as equally guilty for anything that might happen in the aftermath of these threats?

Isn't this criminal neglect made by the police!?

[up] This is not the first time that’s happened, and like the previous times the threat doesn’t appear to be legitimate. Scary, certainly, but barely even rising to the legal standard of menacing conduct.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm confused. Where I come from, a known organization of murderous terrorists leaving death threats at people's homes constitutes something to be concerned about.

Imagine middle-class white people woke up to postcards on their doorsteps that read, "Hey, just popped by to check in on you. Don't make me come back. Sincerely, ISIS." There would be a full-scale investigation within hours. The FBI would get in on this shit.

And yet when it's the KKK, we're just like, "Nah, it's cool. White people gonna white people. Lynch mobs are just harmless fun, really."

Clearly you don't come from the birth state of Nathan Bedford Forrest then.

Terror threats being common in certain parts of this country do not make those threats acceptable.

The KKK needs to be destroyed utterly. Anything less is a failure of our country to support its citizenry. We should, by all rights, be going after Klansmen with the same unrelenting fervor that we instead reserve for black men and Muslims.

We should but the police in the badly run red states have qualified immunity. Which allows them to go after anyone they want with however much force they want and get away with it. So if they want to they are basically allowed to not care about the Klan.

From CNN: Virginia's online voter registration system crashes on final day

A computer outage on the final day of voter registration in Virginia has taken down the online registration system statewide.

Visitors to the state portal were met Tuesday with this message: "Due to a network outage the Citizen Portal is temporarily unavailable."

The site is used for first-time registrations as well as registration updates. It also allows Virginians to apply for an absentee ballot and see the location of their in-person polling place. The elections department also allows registration through a paper form that can be mailed in but must be postmarked Tuesday, the deadline for new voters to register for November's election.

Elections department spokeswoman Andrea Gaines said the problem was a cut fiber cable. She did not have an estimate on when the system would be back up but said work to restore the service is underway.

"This morning the Department of Elections was alerted by the Virginia Information Technology Agency that a fiber cut near Rt. 10 in Chester near the Commonwealth Enterprise Solutions Center (CESC) was impacting data circuits and virtual private network (VPN) connectivity for multiple Commonwealth agencies," Gaines said in a statement. "This has affected the Department's citizen portal along with local registrar's offices across the Commonwealth."

The outage led the state's lieutenant governor, Justin Fairfax, to ask for an extension of the deadline.

"I am officially calling for Virginia's Registration Deadline to be extended beyond today due to the service outages impacting voters' ability to register statewide," Fairfax said.

Department of Elections officials did not immediately comment on whether registration would be extended.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.

There was also a tweet talking about this that literally said "An accidentally cut cable has caused the entire Virginia voter registration online system to go down on the last day to register to vote before election day." Yyyeaahh... I'm not buying that "accidentally" crap.

I didn't say it was acceptable. I was pointing out there shouldn't be a reason for you to be confused.
