Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I know it's cultural but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be changed. Also there's a huge fucking difference between saying you protect free speech and saying that free speech gives you the right to lie. One is giving you the right to say whatever you want without fear of persecution. The other is allowing you to mislead the public by making stuff up when your protection comes from the agreement that you will inform the public.
News authorities should be things that people can listen to without fear of being misinformed but they're not. In effect Fox and such are not doing their jobs as news stations therefore I don't feel they should be granted the protections of a news organization. Now this doesn't mean they can't form their own opinions and hold them. That's one thing. What they can't do is say things like climate change is a myth, edit charts to make them look better (or make Obama look worse), or use conspiracy theories as sources without claiming that it's a theory that has no substantial evidence behind it.
I know they can think whatever they like, they're entitled to, but that means they change the political landscape to reflect that belief which just allows lies to perpetuate.

Many people are but there are also many that aren't. This is the problem. I don't want to have to rely on the BBC. I want to turn on Fox News or MSNBC and expect to be told the facts and nothing but the facts. Speculation is fine and editorials are fine but they cannot be labelled as facts or unbiased analyses and used to prove things.

Or at Comedy Central. It's kind of shameful when the country's best source of news is a comedy show.

Not enough of them. There's a significant demographic who not only couldn't find England on a map, but would be proud of that ignorance, I'd wager.
It makes sense when our politics are a joke.

Shameful but it makes sense. They can say whatever they want and people will just dismiss it because it came from a comedy show and therefore has no journalistic merit.
I once knew a kid that pointed to Japan and said "That's Britain."
Granted we were ten but even I knew where Britain was at that point!

My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username. Not quite as catchy as Mitt Romney Style.
Has Bad Lip Reading covered the second debate yet? Or even the Ryan Biden debate?

That's what Ofcom et al basically do: they act as the means by which the media can be held up to the ideals of journalistic integrity. <shrugs> The reason why the teeth are actually quite minimal is to protect free speech whilst ensuring that that doesn't mean any broadcaster has a completely free licence to turn into a jerk or a mouthpiece for any particular cause.
But, hey: Europe views moderation of the media differently. <shrugs>

Since it wasn't multiple answers deleted, but rather, a single four minute section that was the only part of the transcript that was missing. And all it really contained was part of Romney's response regarding assault weapons and the beginning of the next question...
Since that wasn't the most damning response from Romney in the debate, I don't see why they would delete it and nothing else if it was deliberate.
How Obama or Romney should have answered the iPad question
Yeah, I mean most news outlets I'd assume it was a mistake. Fox has actually done stuff to lose my trust by default, and while I realize they're going to make genuine mistakes as well, sanitizing one of their homeboy's slipups is enough stripes to make me think zebra before horse.

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but Jill Stein and her running mate Cheri Honkla were arrested during a protest outside of the debate.

Eh I think I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I probably shouldn't but I'll allow them a few mistakes. They changed it pretty quick at the very least. Normally when they intentionally edit things they either never correct them or they do so after months and in a way that absolves them of all guilt.
Stein there are better ways to go about doing things than getting arrested.

@ Kostya:
They can think what they like, Britain isn't the US — so what if they regard us a Police State, and their closest ally at the same time?
@ Pykrete: Unless they are forced to be. And it would be even better if they had to pay for it!
