The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It should be noted that the FCC prohibits the use of profanity during daylight hours. Apparently, this is to protect the ears of any children who may or may not be listening.

Ditto what Alley Oop said. I'm honestly kind of surprised at the lack of (taped) racial slurs at this point.

In this particular case, it's less the use of Fuck that's shocking as the quite disturbing sentiment. Although I'm not sure that is technically shocking either because Trump has endorsed war crimes on several occasions.

Is this the first time a sitting US President publicly dropped the F-bomb? Obviously Nixon said it a lot but those were private tapes.

Well there was Biden's gaffe about "A REAL BIG F'IN DEAL". But he was VP then.

It feels odd that anyone would be shocked about this, even with how much I hate Trump. I don’t know a single white man his age who doesn’t say fuck.

It's a polite fiction that we don't say it in public where the kids could be watching. Heck, every now and then we get weirdos coming onto TV Tropes who attempt to sanitize the naughty words... for Jesus or something, I don't know.

The thing that amuses me so much is that the only thing that makes those words any more than just rude is how much people act as if they are (well, maybe with exceptions for those of religious origin, at least, according to practitioners of the corresponding faiths). It’s really a self-fulfilling cycle.

The Miami debate supposed to be set for this Thursday is now cancelled. Trump wouldn't do a virtual event (because its a "waste of time", nevermind him wasting hours spouting propaganda on Faux). The final debate is, for now, set for the 22nd.

It's pretty interesting seeing what concepts become more and less taboo over time. "Fuck" used to be the Ultimate Swear, and now I use it in front of my friend's 10-year-old daughter and nobody cares.

But even just in the last 10-15 years, racial slurs have gone from "mildly impolite as long as they're not spoken with real anger" to "must not be uttered, ever, no matter the context."

So no-one's concerned that Trump threatened to nuke Iran in that same sentence?

I mean, there's a four-way mapping there: he can or cannot do it, he will or will not do it. None of those outcomes are in my control, and there's a limit to how much horror I can feel.

If he’s threatening to do something that’s never been done before, wouldn’t that exclude nuking?

Of course, looking for sense in anything Trump says is a fools errand.

They should have sent a poet.

A little off-topic, but I listened on Secular Talk that it seems that Trump is trying to rush a vaccine to be out before election day.

Does anybody think that it's at all possible to get a vaccine out that fast? And that even if it was possible, anyone would buy that the vaccine is safe or reliable?

Imagine what the anti-vaxers would say if they put out a vaccine that made people sick.

And on the topic of nuking people, the last time a nuke was used as a weapon was 1945. I don't even want to think about how much bigger today's nukes are. Not that Trump would actually go through with it.

[up][up]I dunno, I feel like if you're going to Trump for news on vaccines you're getting it from both sides. He doesn't care about the science and he is ignorant of it anyway.

However, Fauci has said that the Third Stage trials on a number of vaccines are almost done and ready to produce. They've been in the works for some time now and the Oxford vaccine is thoroughly being tested.

So, yes, I would take the Oxford vaccine.

Imagine what the anti-vaxers would say if they put out a vaccine that made people sick.

Thank God for Trump?
