The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Stephen Colbert is releasing a series of videos on Youtube that shows how to vote in every possible way and the mechanics involved in every state. Could be helpful.

My community college is doing early voting this month but my home address is in the county next to it, would I still be able to vote and it would just be counted from my home county or do I need to live in the same county to vote at the college?

SO, Pelosi is making a commission about the 25th Amendment being invoked.

At this point, it's pretty obviously just a tool to make Trump explode like that guy at the end of Big Trouble in Little China after Lo Pan was killed, but as political strategies go it's not bad.

Every hour Trump is distracted is one more for democracy.

Facebook to pause all political advertising—after the election: Banning future problems is great. Letting current ones fester is not.

Oh great, Facebook is going to stop messing around with politics, but only after ruining this election. Fantastic.

We know Trump is on some sort of steroid and, pardon my ignorance, don't most steroids affect the heart? With Trump's pre existing conditions and the stress of his job, I think it could really fuck him up badly.

Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.

[up]x4 Yeah, what she's doing is creating a commission that would take the role of "such other body as Congress may by law provide" in the 25th Amendment.

It can't possibly be used to unseat Trump because the creation of the commission would be a "law" and therefore require passage from both houses of congress and will be subject to Presidential veto.

And the commission still wouldn't be able to unseat a sitting President without the concurrence of the sitting Vice President.

And of course even if all of that happened, the President could still unliterally revoke the declaration. At which point it would have to be affirmed by 2/3rds majority of both houses of congress for the President to be unseated.

At most this is likely one of many pieces of legislation aside that are going to have to be put in place under Biden's administration to make the rise of another Trump far more difficult.

[up][up][up] Steroids are designed to kill everything it comes in contact with, in order to force the body to go into overdrive to compensate for the massive attack against itself.

Consider it a "nuke" and you get the idea.

Other than that, side-effects of steroids may include:

(Insomnia), mood swings, weight gain (from increased appetite), acne, increased sweating, thinning skin, bruising or discoloration, slow wound healing, headaches, dizziness, spinning sensations, nausea, stomach pain, bloating, changes in the shape or location of body fat (especially arms, legs, face, neck, chest, waist...)

And that is not to mention what happens when mixed with other drugs on top or together with them...

Trump was already in drop-bottom bad shape as it was before Covid-19 grabbed him by the-/...got a hold of him.

I don't want to imagine what he shape he will be in once the treatment wears off.

House: Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Google have “monopoly power,” should be split: Blockbuster report calls for beefing up enforcement and aiming for breakups.

It seems the House has reached a conclusion on big tech monopolies:

Last June, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law began an in-depth investigation into four major firms—Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. The subcommittee wanted to answer one key question: did Big Tech get big playing by the rules, or does it cheat to stay at the top? After 16 months of hearings, research, and analysis, the panel's findings are out... and the results look really bad for every company involved.

Damn. It is impressive that Congress found so comprehensively against these companies. I'm still thinking about the article, but it has huge implications for the future... or none, if action isn't taken.

For those unaware, Trump blasted Pompeo on Fox for not producing Hillary's emails. Which apparently he believes are just laying around somewhere in the State Department. Pompeo is doing this to please his master.

I think besides the obvious clinton hate, they're desperate and grasping at straws. We're less than a month away from the election and things are looking pretty dire for Trump with Biden having close to a double digit lead nationally and they have very little time to turn things around.

It's pretty obvious that they are looking for a hot-button issue that will flip the narrative. Since there is none (unless the Biden-Harris campaign has some massive face-plant in the final stretch), they are left grasping at straws.

They're throwing red meat at their base in the hopes of getting it out to vote, but they fail to understand that they've gotten as much reach as they're going to out of the die-hard reality deniers.

Their only real hope at this point is voter suppression. Expect all the focus to be on that in the next four weeks.

The fact that they're going after Hillary is a good thing IMO, because it means they've run out of better ideas. Since she's not running, little of it is going to stick to Biden or Harris.

It really says everything that they had nothing but misogyny and racism to campaign on.

I mean, it's weird they can't even think of ANYTHING to oppose Biden on.

What are these guys being paid for?

Their only real hope at this point is voter suppression. Expect all the focus to be on that in the next four weeks.

I think they should maybe focus on not dying of coronavirus first.
