The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

UK law requires that you have to prove the unambiguous truth of your statement for one. It's basically the inverse of libel law in the US.

Also... Trump's "virtual rally" with Rush Limbaugh... how many prank calls are they going to get? Good grief.

I don’t believe the entire group has been arrested, just several members, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for the remaining members to run the planned event.

So, I learned something today: Delusions of grandeur are one side-effect of the steroid Trump is using.

We might consider lightening up on him when he tweets out insane bullshit. Right now, it's legit not his fault.

It’s his fault that he’s on the medication and it’s his fault that he’s got access to Twitter while on it.

It also does not seem to be that common a side effect in adults.

It is also his fault he is on so many steroids since he insists on going out instead of staying in a medical ward.

Also, the bullshit he's spouting on Twitter now is no different from the bullshit he's usually spouting, except maybe a bit more frenzied. This is not the drugs talking, this is just Donald Trump with even less of a filter.

So it might be drugs causing the delusions of grandeur he spews out right now. What's his excuse for the rest of the time? And how do we tell the difference?

The drugs may be influencing his behaviour - Dr. Fauci’s “very energetic” sounds like a euphemism for saying the drugs are making him manic.

But that is his fault. A responsible president would have looked at the side effects of these steroids and handed power over to the VP until he was off them, or asked his doctors or someone he trusted to make that determination based on his actions.

It's also likely that the desperation from seeing his tanking the poll numbers in the debates and election contributed to his recent tweeting frenzy.

This times a thousand.

It reminds me of when Roseanne Barr got "canceled" because she said a bunch of racist stuff while taking a sedative. The drug didn't put those thoughts into her head; it removed her filter.

I don't think we have to worry about nukes being fired, there's no way the military would obey that order.

When it comes to drugs, this is the one rule concerning them all.

"Drugs always brings out the worst in people. No exceptions."

Trump is not an exception either.

This is basically Trump "uncensored" that we are seeing now, and for added bonus, steroids basically acts as "homicidal maniacs" inside the body, killing everything, including the immune-system, when introduced in order to shut off all the fail-safes in the system to do their extermination job properly.

Once those wears off, Trump is going to go completely defenseless internally without these homicidal maniacs in his system, and considering how he is stubbornly going to keep attending rallies, starting on monday, he might as well be serving his body on a silver-platter for the virus to feast on already.

...

Still, he is the one to blame for his own actions and for allowing the disease to spread out of control as it already has thought...

“All drugs, without exception, bring out the worst in you” feels like a very bad catch-all phrase. I know lots of people who take anti anxiety pills just so that they can drive safely to work, and I’ve been taking hormones (which still count as drugs) since I was 16 with nothing but positive effects. My brother would be in a terrible place, emotionally and mentally, if he stopped taking his prescriptions.

(Correction)

There is a difference between "drugs" and "medication", everyone.

"Drugs" are what brings out the worst in people.

"Medication" just brings the worst from people instead.

(I should have clarified that part earlier...)

@Redmess I admin for a science group, and I do keep a collection of hilariously bad pseudoscience in a document called “just say ‘no’ to drugs”, and many of them seem likely weed-induced.

Medicines are drugs.

Shit, the steroids Trump is taking are actually used for medicinal purposes too.

Cocaine and meth is in no way like anti-anxiety pills.
