Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trumpy is also on a lot of drugs, including a steroid known to cause psychiatric side effects.
So yeah, dude is high as balls. I hear that drug has a hell of a crash once you stop taking it though.
Strap yourselves in boys, girls, and not applicables.

Pelosi has discussed invoking the 25th Amendment.
Some suggest she's just hoping Trump will go nuts some more because of it.

He is gonna deny COVID to the grave it seems. Even on live TV, he will downplay COVID to look strong.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.Well, at least part of the push would have to come from those islands. From what I know, the current sentiment in Guam is toward greater autonomy, not statehood (though not independence either, because Guam is dependent on federal dollars - also, I don't think most American Presidents would be willing to let Guam go).
Naturally, Republicans are up in arms - which is stupid, because it's been stated that this commission is unlikely to have any conclusions or recommendations before the election. In fact, it's more likely to have an impact on the next administration, whomever that turns out to be.
So if the Republicans stopped screaming bloody murder and took a breath, they could parley this into an attack on Biden with all the associated conspiracy theories about his alleged unfitness for offline - and that this commission is the Democrats tacitly acknowledging that "fact".
I suppose because when someone is unfit for office because they're drugged out of their mind, they shouldn't be in charge of the world's most powerful military and with unimaginable power?
This shouldn't be a political move. It's only one because the Republicans have utterly abrogated their responsibilities.
Yes, which is designed to guarantee the President can fire the nukes and not be interfered with.
The military removed Nixon's authority to do it during impeachment but they're not supposed to.

Or hell, just being a dangerous source of misinformation several degrees worse than his usual thanks to his drugged-up ramblings and being a literal plague spreader thanks to his total denial of his condition. The fact is that there's a statistically-significant chance Trump will become incapacitated due to covid and the government should be prepared to deal with that. It's not a coup, it's not denying reality in order to coddle the president's strongman image.

Oops, sorry, didn't mean to suggest there should be unilateral action by the mainland. Was just wondering if there might be a change in the status quo. It's interesting that Guam is for more autonomy over statehood because AFAIK, there's a segment of Puerto Rico that feels the same way.
Raleigh News & Observer:
Biden backs Lumbee tribe's push for federal recognition
...
"Six decades ago, Congress recognized the Lumbee Tribe but denied it the benefits that all other federally recognized tribes receive," said a statement from the campaign. "It is past time for the federal government to rectify this injustice and fully recognize the Lumbee tribe, providing it with the critical resources it needs to prosper."
...
But while North Carolina has long recognized the tribe, the federal government has denied the Lumbee that status since 1956, when Congress acted to deny members that full legal status and corresponding access to benefits.
Huh, I remember first hearing about the Lumbee tribe from watching several people argue over whether one of them was a "fake poser Indian" on social media and one of the others (who admittedly was calling themselves an anti-SJW) claimed that the Lumbee tribe were all liars because they lacked formal recognition.
This was from before I was made aware of how blood quantum laws were deliberately exclusionary in nature and used to rob culturally recognized Native Americans of valid self-identification. Glad to hear of it, and I hope that one person from years ago feels some peace knowing that people will now have to respect their identity.

Sorry, just had to quote this paragraph from the Guardian article about the plot to kidnap Governor Whitmer.
Well no shit it's not going to be taking place. Is there a reason the reporter has to add that extra quantifier? Like do they imagine a right wing nut job who was otherwise unaffiliated to the plot but in reading this article from The Guardian finds out about this training exercise, only upon arrival finds out it was cancelled and so he decides to sue the Guardian for false advertising?

@ What Covid does to the mind: I saw a report a while back saying COVID causes aggression, confusion, delirium, it causes pain, loss of taste and smell, impaired thinking.
So...
...this sounds a lot like the lead in to the backstory of NieR. Like, all that was missing was eyes turning red—-aww shit.
