Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Codafett Yeah, as pointed out above, a lot of the Republican party runs on a belief that the DNC more or less wants to outright destroy America and is within its power to do so.
This is a big part of why many Republicans were still willing to vote Trump, justifying their actions with something along the lines of "Trump is a terrible person, but 4 more years of the Democrats running America and there won't be another election"
This is also part of why the narrative that politicians are all evil, when taken too far, is ironically helpful to evil politicians. It allows the worst politicians to draw false equivalencies between their worst crimes and bog-standard political underhandedness and to make said crimes look normal.
Leviticus 19:34Not that I'd expect Republicans to come up with any sane logic to this, but how do ya figure Democrats would "destroy" the country when they could have done that 20 times over whenever they had a Democratic President/majority in the House or Senate in the past.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.
They probably rationalize themselves thinking that the Republicans stopped the Democrats' evil plan.
Much like how cult leaders say "The end is near, so give up your material possessions to stop the end." and when the apocalypse doesn't come, they say "the end didn't come thanks to your donations."
The latter was more focused on one specific group of evangelical Christians - the 2012 doomsday stuff had a somewhat larger base.
At least, that’s what I recall.
Oh God! Natural light!@Steven Actually not that hard to justify, they tend to simply believe the party became more radical fairly recently if I recall and hasn't had time to destroy America since deciding on that goal.
Leviticus 19:34Fauci is no longer even trying and flat out says that Trump is only running around because he's on roids.

"When you're on steroids, there are a number of side effects. It makes you hyper energetic, it sometimes interferes with your ability to sleep. If you're on it [dexamethasone] a very long time, and which he's not, and they don't plan on having him on it for a long period of time, there are long range side effects. But the side effects when a person is on a higher dose for a short time, it's more that you're very energetic."

@LBSK, IMO DC statehood is almost a certainty. The bill passed the House with near unanimous Democratic support (Peterson was the only no) and I can't see any Democratic Senator voting against when it comes down to it. Biden is supportive as well, IIRC
Puerto Rico is much iffier, partly because unlike DC it isn't certain that statehood is the consensus or majority view on the island itself. Biden has said here that he'll follow the will of the Puerto Rican people.
I'm curious as to whether there will be a push to make any of the other island territories (American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam) states.

I studied steroids a lot in college. Even though corticosteroids aren't quite the tricky subject as their anabolic cousins (I wrote like 3 anabolic steroid legalization papers), there are still a lot of side effects especially if the dose is high. And there's also the fact that Trump most likely still has the virus kicking around.
Sure it can't reduce his lungs to mush, but there's other stuff COVID can do.

Like my insane co-worker I always tell you guys about. Whose convinced that the purpose of the Republican party is to stop the Democrats from enslaving us all. Of course he tries to explain it in a way that doesn't sound absolutely batshit but he doesn't realize that I'm not a simpleton.
People like him though are what worry me. If there's one thing that GOP have done a fantastic job of, it's convincing their voters that the alternative is giving in to a devil worshipping, cannibalistic communist regime.
Just Having FunThe one thing I've heard multiple times about COVID-19 is blood clots and the sheer amount of them in patients.
“Patients are making clots all over the place,” says Adam Cuker, MD, a hematologist and associate professor of medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. “That’s making management of these patients very challenging.”

The Alaska State House had this weird thing where a number of Republicans caucused with Democrats to give them the majority in the chamber (kind of like the IDC in New York, but the other way around). But with the November election coming up, it looked like the coalition is falling apart - 2 of the 6 members lost their primaries, one died in a plane crash, and another 2 have just announced that they'll be returning to the Republican part. Anchorage News Daily
I wonder what it'll mean for the state House? Is there any hope of Democrats winning an outright majority?
