The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So we’re not sure if it’s correct or not. Because Pence had to cancel plans for tomorrow for some reason...

I'd wait a bit to see if any other news sites start posting it.

I have a feeling that if it were legitimate, it would be trending on Twitter.

Deadline accidentally put out a draft article about Pence having COVID, it remains unclear if the draft exists because he has it and they can’t say yet, or because they’re simply pre-drafting the article for when he inevitably has it.

[up]

Yeah, similar to how publications might have a few different drafts for election coverage so that they can put it out swiftly with minimal edits rather than have to write up a full report after the news occurred.

The one weird thing is that Deadline haven't said that that’s why it exists, you’d think they’d just say that the article was pre-drafted for if he gets COVID, instead they’ve just said that it shouldn’t have gone out.

Pelosi, along with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), have proposed establishing a new bipartisan committee made of medical professionals and Cabinet members to evaluate the president's health as per the 25th Amendment.

They note that this will very likely not apply to Trump, but is intended for future presidents. Not that this detail is stopping right-wingers on social media from labeling Pelosi as planning a "coup", but then again...

[up][up] To make the whole coup issue even more silly, the way the text of the 25th Amendment is written, any body established by congress to evaluate the President's fitness to serve would still only be able to invoke the 25th Amendment with the concurrence of the Vice President.

Which means even if the bill was somehow passed (which it won't be during this session), it could only remove Trump if Mike Pence concurred.

If I weren't worried for everyone else's health I'd say let him but make him run a mile first. But I'm worried he is going to infect the moderator, and Biden, and the audience, and the crew, and basically everyone out of pure spite.

For those who are at awe / really don’t know on the militia movement in America, Southern Poverty Law Center has capped more than 200. Had to learn that while doing my remote internship on handling counterterrorism issues.

And once you know that Tim McVeigh had visited the Michigan Militia prior to Oklahoma, then finding out that a militia wanted to grab the governor is not new. There are militias that are known to be anti-government and pro-sovereign.

Strange thing on the latter is that it got picked up in Australia and Singapore due to COVID.

Five Thirty Eight's article on who won the VP debate

The short answer is Harris.

The slightly longer answer is that it didn't move the needle much overall, but on the metrics where the needle did move at all it moved in Harris's favor. Most notably Harris went from a net favorability of +5 to a net favorability of +10, while Pence stayed at -14.

As for my personal take I would say that any positive developments on the Biden Harris ticket is extremely good news because Trump has very little time to make the race competitive. Harris didn't really need to win the debate at all, she just needed to not lose.

So I'm noticing a trend with the Pence and Trump debates. Their entire platforms seem to be enflaming this primal fear that conservatize voters have that if Biden and Harris win, any change enacted by them will lead to their immediate demise. And that's not even counting the unspoken bullshit about either party being a communist.

[up][up]I mean that's mostly what the GOP has run on for a while now. The democratic party is portrayed as this existential threat to everything that "america" stands for, which is basically codeword for "a society that isn't run by powerful, straight, christian white men with money".

The debate felt like a lot of deflections on both end, but at least Harris managed to not deflect with blatant lies, unlike Pence.

It was largely Pence's debate to lose, although since he's not Trump, I'm not surprised he held his own.
