Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yup.
To Summarize: A bunch of UK nationals were members of ISIS, and the US wanted to put them on trial. UK courts wouldn't go for it without the death penalty being off the table. Once the talks were completed, extradition is moving forward.
Likely won't have any impact on the election or even news cycle, ISIS is out of the public eye right now.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Have they actually rolled the entire militia up? My understanding is it’s less than a dozen people being charged, which indicates that a lot of the militia’s members are still able to operate, it’s only the sub-group around this specific plot that have been arrested.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranMichigan Republicans have actually come out with a pretty solid statement, at least from what I’m seeing on Reddit.
Best I can tell it’s 13 people being charged, including 7 members of a specific militia, but the fact that they specific they’re members indicates that there’s more to the group than just the 7 arrested.
So it’s 6 main conspirators who they tried to help help from 7 militia guys.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThey're terrorists, plain and simple.
S the legality of those militia groups is in question as well. I suspect it is increasingly a cover for home-grown terrorism, especially now that Qanon gives them something to point their guns at.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesThe words would definitely be admirable, if I had any reason to believe the speaker believed them.
My musician pageThe interesting thing is that whilst there apparently is no federal definition of "Domestic Terrorism" or similar legal term of art, the FBI apparently did use resources and techniques from their anti-terrorism division.
So whilst the Justice Department might be sitting on their hands with regards to right-wing extremism the FBI is finding ways to use the tools they have effectively.
There is a question as to whether those tools are appropriate for domestic use in general but it does seem for this specific case they were.

Well, at least he isn't egging them on.
If you are still planning to go vote in person, you have this to look forward to, it seems. It's going to be one hell of an election.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesCollins is urging voters in Maine to split the ticket.
"Collins began airing an ad this week that urges voters to vote for her “no matter who you’re voting for for president.""
The article also noted that Mc Sally is belatedly trying to avoid being linked to Trump despite being full MAGA this entire cycle.
I guess not.

It is weird, I did not expect Michigan of all places to pull that off. I expected it from like. Florida, or Texas, maybe even California as it has deeply angry deep red pockets.
Then again I frankly know nothing about Michigan.
