Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, things are much more sedate than the first debate, but I think that has more to do with the candidates' temperaments than the strength of the moderator.

Oh God! Natural light!Per Five Thirty Eight's liveblog:
Outside of the hardcore base, most of the things Pence is saying sound like things that would actually sway undecided voters towards Biden, given how most of them are for the things he claims Biden supports.
Granted I'm on the left of the political spectrum, but thus far everything Pence has said that isn't a straight-up lie, is something that sounds like a good thing IMO.

Pence's first attack towards Biden is "he's a cheerleader for Communist China". Again, not an attack that will affect anyone strongly outside of the deep base.
...And we're back to Pence trying to blame COVID on China, recycling statements from earlier in the debate. Hooray for Sinophobia.

Indeed, this talk of China and Russia seems largely aimed at riling up their respective bases more than persuading undecideds. In that regard Pence is pressing that button more firmly.

And if you're socialist, you are paranoid of the USA!

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -Fighteer538 just dropped: Guys, a VP debate is only going to matter if someone screws up terribly. Otherwise, it’s pretty whatever.
Pretty much my take on it. Unless Harris makes a major gaffe, or Pence somehow pulls the speech of his career out of his ass, in the next half hour, this probably won't change much.
And that's good news for Team Biden, because they are ahead.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

This debate's a handy reminder that Pence is a scumbag in his own right.
There's a reason he was on the verge of losing his governorship in a red state.

Disgusted, but not surprised
