The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If Trump is a robot, couldn't he just use antivirus software?

Edit: Well that's a strange page-topper.

Norton has marked itself as a virus numerous times. The various ways that antiviruses screw themselves over is fairly well documented here if you want an introduction to how utterly incompetent they can get.

McAfee actually comes out ahead, crazy founder aside.

[up] Yet he loves eating fast food. It's mind-boggling

It's a common misconception that people with more sensitive tastes will gravitate towards more delicate, nuanced foods. It's actually the opposite: the stronger your sense of taste, the more flavors will seem absolutely disgusting to you. Because what's a delicate "hint of X" to a normal taster will instead be closer to the overpowering flavor of chemical detergent or whatever to someone with a stronger sense of taste. Which ends up making many foods seem completely unappetizing.

So a picky eater will naturally gravitate towards things that are loaded with salt or sugar so they don't have to taste anything else.

[up] My point was that fast food joints don't necessarily have a reputation of cleanliness, so a germaphobe preferring their food is a tad confusing.

He probably believes it's made too fast and delivered too quickly for any germs to get on the food.

...Oh ffs he might really think that.

Since I saw the word "Antichrist" mentioned a few pages back, I just wanna remind everybody that the Beast from the book of Revelation is never called "the Antichrist" in the actual text, and in fact Revelation never mentions the word "Antichrist" once.

And concerning Trump's eating, he likes fast food places because they get the food ready before you've even ordered, so they can't poison him as easily since they didn't know he was even coming.

I’ve seen it claimed that Trump begin a germaphobe is actually a lie he made up to avoid touching people, so that he can avoid touching black people. I don’t know if there’s any veracity to that claim but it would be far from the most absurd thing about him.

Its not germs he worries about with food, its being posioned, and he thinks since fast food is not something some one can know he is going to order it and not some one else.... that it cant be posioned on him.

There are plenty of performance enhancing drugs you could take to increase focus or calm nerves. That really is not all that outlandish of a claim.

Not really. It's pretty much just stimulants like caffeine and amphetamines. Other performance enhancing drugs are more about boosting athletic performance ("doping" basically).

Trump's basically accusing Biden of being coked up to the gills for the debates (cocaine is a stimulant).

Well, that didn't last long, did it? Practically overnight, Trump's changed his tune about the stimulus bill:

Yeah, let's remember that Trump's claim was that if Biden wasn't the doddering, senile "Sleepy Joe" Trump lied into existence, it was because Biden's team had shot him full of drugs, basically.

So yes, an outlandish claim made to shore up another of Trump's lies.

It's been fun.

About those finite heart beats, I do remember reading a scientific article where it mentions that all mammals have about the same number of heart beats before they die, and that there is a correlation between how fast a mammal's heart beats and its lifespan. I think Trump's (and others') belief about exercise depleting your life expectancy might come from there.

[up] Of course, but the outlandish part wasn't that there are drugs you can take to enhance a debate performance.

Twitter thread suggesting Trump has finally hit the Narcissists' "death spiral "

https://twitter.com/TheRealHoarse/status/1313513475491143681?s=19

     Content of thread
At some point, a narcissist’s whole shtick implodes. Their fragile, porcelain facade cracks in too many places. They lose control of the narrative. They double down on increasingly unbelievable things.

And then the monument topples and the pigeons finally scatter.

There are always a few diehard hangers-on but they lose the crowd.

It has been so long with Trump - and his cult is so brainwashed by a propaganda machine bigger than him - I had more or less given up on his implosion ever coming.

It feels like we’re finally there though.

His routine has run its course.

It has been too much for too long; and it has been too much all at once.

His debate tantrum was eye-opening to people usually tunneled in on watching only Trump with no one beside him as contrast.

His COVID case fractured his many lies about coronavirus.

It isn’t going away. Even he isn’t well protected from it. And all of that is his own fault.

His facade of strength and competence and control has just sprung too many leaks.

When Trump took office, I figured it would take two years.

His narcissism would fully play itself out in a boom-bust cycle.

His many enablers have insulated, rescued and propped him up though.

It has just gotten to be too big a job.

All the Hannitys in the world can’t rehab the image of a guy gasping for air from the disease he said was a hoax.

This is the death spiral of a narcissist.

Took forever to get here.

Now, we get to help it along by shining as bright a light as possible on his every fraud and failure - especially the recent ones.

With narcissists, the bottom can just fall out all of the sudden.

And after all the times you thought it might but didn’t, it can leave you wondering “why this?” and “why now?”

The Eggman just falls off the wall.

And for a change, all the king’s men can’t fix it.

A big part of a narcissist’s success is the illusion of infallibility.

Run with the message that Trump has fallen.

He fell to Biden in the debate. He fell to COVID. He is falling like a rock in the polls.

I think Trump has finally entered the death spiral of a narcissist.

Help it along.

Amplify his failures and weaknesses.

Poor little Trumpty is teetering up on the wall.

Let’s push him off with both hands.

Amusingly, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog had an episode where Eggman/Robotnik was angered and jailed a cartoonist that made a cartoon comparing him to Humpty Dumpty.
