Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Do you think Russia would turn out like Bosnia? In any case, forcible regime change often leads to unforeseen and unpleasant consequences. Throwing out Saddam Hussein is still having negative consequences today. So does toppling Iran's government.
And I wouldn't exactly call Russia powerless, not with a vast nuclear arsenal. And while they may not be the superpower they used to be, they still have plenty of military power left.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest times
The issue wasn't overthrowing Saddam, but how the US handled the aftermath, including firing everyone with a party membership (many of them in the military) instead of going for a more nuanced approach.

I think you may be misinterpreting the comparison, but it's probably a cultural thing.
I think from the perspective of the US, the Bosnian interventions are broadly positive. Whereas from a Dutch perspective I understand that there is a much visceral sense of collective guilt and failure over the Srebrencia massacre, as it was a Dutch military unit under the auspices of the UN that was in the best place to prevent the genocide.

Okay, I'm not sure how the idea of America intervening in Russia and overthrowing Putin got suggested, but some pointers:
Russia has a nuclear arsenal.
Russia has the biggest nuclear arsenal, bar none. Yes, including the States.
Russia is traditionally nigh impossible to invade and hold.
Russia has gotten rid of their no first use policy.
Trying to invade to depose Putin would be a great way to turn the entire northern hemisphere into glass and solve the pesky issue of elections by turning the US into a de facto military dictatorship (from pure necessity alone), but it would be awful at actually making anything better.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerContext for the relief talk: The Federal Reserve Chair, Jerome Powell, said that economic recovery could falter without more federal stimulus earlier today in his speech at the National Association for Business Economics
. There is also an AP news article on the general relief situation that explores the general economic impact of COVID-19
, and a Bloomberg article on the pandemic's specific economic impact
. Summary for both the economic articles, the economy is struggling (even more so just now) and needs some federal stimulus to get back on its feet.
Puerto Rico's Republican governor Wanda Vázquez Garced has endorsed Trump.
More manic tweeting from the superspreader in Chief. These are the ones I’m pretty sure he did himself.
The Fake News Media refuses to discuss how good the Economy and Stock Market, including JOBS under the Trump Administration, are doing. We will soon be in RECORD TERRITORY. All they want to discuss is COVID 19, where they won’t say it, but we beat the Dems all day long, also!!!
Did anyone get to see that absolute “Joke” of a Town Hall interview that Joe Biden did with Concast @NBC News , hosted by Lester Holt? What a disgrace to our Country that FREE public airwaves can be used that way. All SOFTBALLS. A big FIX. Time should be paid by the corrupt DNC!
Mini Mike Bloomberg, who made a fool of himself on the Dems debate stage when Elizabeth Warren & the others simply took him apart, is going “crazy” trying to buy his way back into the Liberal Democrat’s hearts. His Florida ads are lies. I am much better for SENIORS than Sleepy!
The thread from 2:48 pm on the other hand, was obviously not.

Trump just caused the Dow Jones to tank 400 points because he said he wouldn't get a relief bill passed until after his re-election. Yeah, I'm sure the economy is doing great.
I mean... they're called public airwaves for a reason, yeah? And what does he mean by "time should be paid"? Also, Trump needs to learn how to use Scare Quotes.
"Mini Mike Bloomberg" makes me think of plushie brands. I didn't catch the debate he's talking about, though, could someone please link or summarize it for me? Thanks. Also, see my Scare Quotes comment above.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrThere's no point in engaging with him on these talking points. A common right wing tactic is to exhaust the opponent by bombarding them with a bunch if inane stupid arguments that they waste all their time trying to refute.
Much better to highlight what Biden's policies are and how he'll do a much better job of fixing the country that Trump has ruined. What did he talk about at the Town Hall meeting anyway?

Just to be safe, can we put Biden back in his house and then bubble wrap the house? I don't feel comfortable with him being anywhere near Trump at the debate with the way Trump shouts and raves and spreads his virus everywhere.
