Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's a part of me that would gain great catharsis from seeing Biden join the ICC then remand all of Trump's cronies for international prosecution for crimes against humanity.
Edit: Of course, it would only have jurisdiction over things like the ICE detainments, but that should be enough people to keep the court going for a while.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"What baffles me isn't that Trump stopped stimulus talks, cause that's totally on brand. But I am puzzled by the timing, you would think that someone who attaches such value to the stock market would announce this on a Friday evening. Not in the middle of the week, when investors have all the time in the world to panic.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Huh.
That law was introduced by Republicans and...supported in its majority by Democrats...

Oh, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff are now entering quarantine after the vice commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Charles Ray, tested positive for COVID
. One can't help but wonder if he caught that shit from Trump, too.
Oh, and a Buffalo man is being charged with criminally-negligent homicide
after pushing down an 80-year-old man (who later died from the blunt-force trauma suffered from it) in an argument that started over the former's treatment of a waitress, but escalated over the fucking mask issue.
Eh, daily life for anyone who might suffer from inflamed hemorrhoids.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Assume 99% of all polls are within 5% of the true value (66% are within 3.5%) for a single candidate. Therefore even if there were no movement whatsoever between polls, the real value would presumably be ~9%-10%. As a polling firm, CNN apparently has no partisan bias (assuming they conducted it themselves), so...
Of course you can be more pedantic and check what their normal error is, and it doesn't account for polling averages, but if a non-garbage pollster gets 14% then that's significant.
As for the bill being quashed, I saw the suggestion the evil turtle convinced Trump to step in so that he would have a new obstacle to rally around and accuse Biden of being a failure for the next 2-4 years and win back the Senate at midterms.

And the person that said the stocks would hurt - have a cookie, as the Dow Jones quickly spiked and dropped, closing down 346 points
.
So much for "The Stock Market is at record levels"[1].

So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrThat's the goal. In the Tweet thread in question, Trump cancels all stimulus negotiations until after the election, but promises that as soon as he's re-elected, they'll ram through a huge, sweeping stimulus bill.
He's trying to hold the stimulus to ransom and claim that you're only getting a stimulus if you vote for Trump. Joke's on him; I think most people with even a basic understanding of how elections work can reason that you'll get a better stimulus if you vote for Biden. Trump's trying to play chicken with Biden on the topic of welfare; he's totally fucked on this one.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yeah, I'm going to have a firm no on regime change in Russia too. We all know how that ends when the US starts meddling in foreign affairs. It's never good. Also, there's the whole messing with a nuclear power thing.
No, I don't think Biden will be any worse for Russia than say, Obama, and neither should he.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI confess my initial thought on the COVID relief thing is that Trump just wants to send a middle finger to everyone and has stopped caring because the GOP is going to try and steal the election for him anyway.
If it IS a game of chicken, yeah that's not a particularly good one for him. It's not as if Biden isn't going to promise a generous relief bill himself and given he is generally more well-liked and trusted than Trump, trump gains no real advantage from doing that.

The act only actually calls for war if people are tried at an international court that the US is not a party to, so the US could always join the ICC.
