The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up] With the recent crackdown on Muslim face coverings in some non-English western countries, I'm going to dispute that. There is a strong sentiment in the West against covering your face.

[up]I have a feeling the problem is more about the Muslim part than the face covering part.

[up][up]In that case, this is more a racial thing than a "western" thing instead.

It is partially a racial thing, but also a social one. Covering your face is generally seen as being up to no good. Even wearing a cap has this effect, unfortunately.

Those things aren't mutually exclusive, if anything they feed into one another: covering your face makes you look suspiscious, and doing so while being a non-white person makes you look criminal, so the "logic" goes.

You really should have seen this coming.

Pat Robertson, televangelist and long-time Republican activist/political operator once blamed the 2010 Haitian earthquake on the Haitian people “making a deal with the devil” during the 1791 slave rebellion.[1]

Certainly, I'm well aware that they've used natural disasters for hateful reasons.

But, that's not quite what I meant by "not politicizing earthquakes". Rather, I mean they haven't made doing nothing about earthquakes a central part of their ideology. Not like their view of Covid.

I just realized...

...Trump and the GOP are trying to pull an Chernobyl-moment here aren't they?

(And that series terrified me when I saw it.)

I mean, how many of them are going to blame the rising death-count on the flu rather than Covid-19 now when the flu-season is approaching?

And for that matter, how is the rest of Okt-...

...(Realization)...

Yikes, Trump actually managed to remain as president for four years already.

It feels surreal now in hindsight when thinking back on when he first appeared as the "winner" back then.

Assuming he makes it through the month, that is...

Oh, this is a nice spreadsheet drawing data from various polling sites (mostly 538 now) to illustrate vote outcomes. However, I'm linking it mostly because of the cartogram once you scroll down a bit.

Much better for illustrating electoral college results than an actual geographical map.

Two more positive White House cases including one of Trump's valets and one of the military aides (the people who carry the nuclear "football" codes.

Great, more people doing non-partisan (one of them absolutely vital) jobs suffer due to partisan hackery.

And in similar yet more pressing news; several members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are self-isolating after a Coast Guard Admiral tested positive.

Do they have one of those fumigation tarps big enough to cover the entire White House? Cause that place needs to be purified up the wazoo if Joe moves in.

[up][up][up] I'm not sure what you mean by that. He lives there, you know.

[up] I mean, people thought it could flip in 2018. Texas isn't quite the stable bastion of Republicanism as it used to be, it seems.

Biden's lead is insane.

He's up 17 points as of today. He's also in double digits among Senior Citizens.

I've never feared Trump winning a fair election. I just don't think that's likely.

Like a lot of what we consider "red" states, Texas is a lot more liberal in the major cities. I lived in Dallas for three years, and it has a lot of pretty progressive folk.

I'm not a political expert, so I have no idea how likely it is to flip, but my personal experience supports the notion that it's not wildly outside the realm of possibility.
