Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn for more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done. But we also know that the lives these Americans led stand in stark contrast to those of their attackers." —Barack Obama, September 12 in Rose Garden, on Benghazi attacks
Now people on the Right are insisting that when Obama said "Acts of terror," he was just referring to terror in general. Even though the rest of his statement shows that he was referring specifically to Benghazi.
This is the game of the Right now. When he says something with his sentence in the wrong order ("You didn't build that"), the Right says he meant it exactly as it came out. When he says something that proves Romney wrong, the Right says he was out of context. Ridiculous.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.
Democrats are about as guilty actually.
I think it would be best if we got past the Republicans do this the Democrats do that and just swap to "The political machine does this"
Out of context sound bytes are the currency of the media.
But with that I think it was clear Romney meant Obama never said it was a terrorist attack, I.E. act of terror, not an act of terror as in a horrific act. That whole part of the debate though was sort of dumb, it's not like any president is dealing with the individual security of embassies and consulates.

Bet you didn't see that comingYeah, the first debate was, from a Republican perspective, a case of Villain Forgot to Level Grind.

My mother is a pretty staunch Republican. Seriously the number of issues I've had over me being gay ugh... (And honestly it's more complex than the general wave the bible argument in her case so let's not even go there)
Point is she abhors fox news, and generally watches BBC, NHK, or ZDF, and I know she watches nightly business report.. the round table bleh bleh bleh. She watches the local news and gets a bit irritated with the lean but you know whatever. Hell I don't think we even GET fox news.
The point I'm trying to make here more or less is you're trying to paint all Republicans the same color, and it just doesn't work like that. Sure you may be getting a lot of them, but certainly not all of them. Everyone thinks what they're doing is for the best in the end. I swear, there's no puppy eating going on here T.T

Bet you didn't see that comingMy coworker puts it this way: the republicans are a bunch of cunts and the democrats are a bunch of pussies.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Twitterand this is why I hate people.
The woman who asked about pay inequality is being attacked by right-wing news sources as being a tool, a shill, a femenazi, a liar, etc.
Aque, Fox news is the voice of the Republican party. They have repeatedly been caught red-handed reading directly from GOP memorandums and talking points. It's not merely "this group of people seems to oddly adhere to the same sort of mindset as another group of people," it is in fact "this group of people are directly taking cues from the other group of people as a means to influence them."
For whatever reason, Fox News is seen and used as a means to rally the base, to send out a specific message with great conviction, to change the course of public discourse, by the Republican Party, and that is because it is statistically the most trusted name in news. That is not me making fun of its moniker, it really is. It invites a mindset which reinforces that Fox is the only trustworthy source in news. At the same time, it is also the least trusted name in news, because people recognize that it's full of shit.

I'm not denying they have a strong base consisting of much of the party. I'm just saying they don't have the whole entire party under their sway.
I'll admit however that the power they have over the republican party is quite frightening.

Bet you didn't see that comingAnd I'm saying that it may not have all of the party, but it still has the majority and the means to shift the conversation in ways which are beneficial to their elections and setting social policy unofficially. There's a reason why Global Warming Is a fraud is a real thing, since Fox championed the hacked emails several years ago, and then failed to mention that the scientists involved were cleared of wrongdoings.

I can't do math. It's supposed to be 4 billion.
But still
8 million > 4 billion.
This is why we need people who can actually number in politics. Or you know, math education, but people are going to stop learning how to count as soon as PBS is cut.
