Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Pence and Harris are getting plexiglass.
Alito and Thomas have called for overturning Obergefell v. Hodges
, which in addition to the obvious implications on marriage equality would blatantly permit destroying the separation of church and state by endorsing people refusing to do the very job they signed up for if the other party won't conform to their religious beliefs.
Yeah, it was a 7-1 vote against hearing the case in the first place, with only Alito actively wanting to overturn Obergefell, and Clarence agreeing with Alito on the substance but not the actual ruling, meaning that Kavanaugh and Gorsuch both disagreed with Alito and Thomas's wanting to destroy LGBTQ+ rights. I have a feeling that any case that tries to hurt individuals like this will fall really short of Bigots wishes; the worst we could get is 6-3 even with Barrett on the Court.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court also refused to hear the case of Kim Davis, a former Kentucky county clerk, who had refused to hand out marriage licenses for same-sex couples arguing her religious convictions prevented her from recognizing such unions.
“Davis may have been one of the first victims of this court’s cavalier treatment of religion in its Obergefell decision, but she will not be the last,” Thomas wrote. “Due to Obergefell, those with sincerely held religious beliefs concerning marriage will find it increasingly difficult to participate in society without running afoul of Obergefell and its effect on other anti-discrimination laws.”
Thomas continued: “It would be one thing if recognition for same-sex marriage had been debated and adopted through the democratic process, with the people deciding not to provide statutory protections for religious liberty under state law. But it is quite another when the court forces that choice upon society through its creation of atextual constitutional rights and its ungenerous interpretation of the Free Exercise Clause, leaving those with religious objections in the lurch.”
The stinging opinion from Thomas renewed the debate over how established the court’s Obergefell decision should be seen. Some liberal activists said it was an indication the court might revisit the decision, especially if President Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett is successful.

The problematic part is that it's unusual for justices to make a statement like this when saying why a case isn't being heard. They agreed that there was no reason to hear the case... and then went off to say why they want to overturn the results of a recent case.
Also, Thomas is an enormous hypocrite, having grown up under Jim Crow and being in an interracial marriage.
"Also, Thomas is an enormous hypocrite, having grown up under Jim Crow and being in an interracial marriage."
I was listening to an interview with Jim Clyburn a while ago and he mentioned that one of his biggest regrets was not doing anything to stop Thomas's confirmation. He'd never met another black man filled with such self-loathing.
And in other news, I have another nomination for "2020 is the Year of the Malkavian."
Claudia Conway, 15 year old who hates her racist parents, used Tik Tok to explain that Donald Trump is actually dangerously ill and that her mother is part of the group covering it up. Also, she was pissed that her mother lied to her about having coronavirus since she was around her all day.

So, yes, it turns out Tik Tok may actually be as big a danger as Trump thought.
