The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

From this article:

There is a long history in the Trump family of denying serious illness. According to a Trump family friend, Trump’s father, Fred Trump Sr., insisted on working even after his Alzheimer’s disease advanced in the 1990s. “To retire is to expire!” Fred Sr. would say. The friend said that as Fred Sr.’s disease worsened––he once came down the stairs wearing three neckties––the family created a system so that Fred could think he was still running the Trump Organization. Every day Fred Sr. would go to the office in Brooklyn and they would give him blank papers to sort through and sign. The phone on Fred’s desk was set up so that it could only dial out to his secretary. “Fred pretended to work,” the family friend said.

Clearly this is not just a Trump thing, but something of a family tradition, a refusal to admit to serious illness.

It collapsed. Yes, really. It's not doing all that well, hence why you're not hearing about it from Trump so much any more.

Oh yeah, and some organization collecting money for it was a huge scam.

Overall, it all was just a huge waste of tax payer money.

It’s not been built, what has been built is not a wall, also some of what has been built fell over due to some high winds.

Also a couple of his people got arrested for scamming Trump supporters out of their money by pretending they’d use it to build the wall then running off with it.

Oh and I think a bunch of military schools (as in schools for service-members kids) didn’t get upgraded because he used the money from them to build the tiny bit of not-wall that got done. Also I think they might have tried to bulldoze a butterfly sanctuary.

I often hear stories of parts of the wall being sold for scrap metal.

You can get through trump's "wall" with 100 bucks to purchase a saw and cut off bits of it. It's pretty shit.

What has been built is apparently also not particularly effective. The particular design they chose actually results in a very weak structure thanks to those tall iron slats.

On another note, it seems Trump's approval ratings are steadily climbing, despite, well, everything.

I'm not sure why, or what it means. It is also a very different pattern from what it was before, without the quick peaks and lows.

Also I think they might have tried to bulldoze a butterfly sanctuary.

It gets weirder because we need to rename the Tyson Zone trope to the Trump Zone.

It wasn't the government who tried to demolish the butterfly sanctuary. Just some random guys who wanted to build the wall.

Likewise, plenty have tried to build "The Wall" or scammed to build the Wall independently of Trump.

Maybe its not him, he actually looks scared in those clips. Maybe its his political circle telling him he needs to look strong before the election?

It's definitely Trump being stubborn. His circle is probably smart enough to realize they need him alive and would try to keep him that way.
