The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm fairly sure his chances of PERSONALLY dying have just gone way up.

He is going to directly kill people this time.

Anyway... the expected Covid denier tweets have been made, now the trouble begins. His poll numbers I expect to skyrocket. This sucks sooo much.

Does it kill to acknowledge reality for once and not be so bloody pessimistic?

I am indifferent to whatever consequences Trump has coming his own way regarding this decision. But the effects that this will have on how the country's already poor response to this pandemic are going to be disastrous.

"Caught Covid because of his own stupidity and survived because he has the best doctors in the world" would be a weird thing for his poll numbers to rise to.

We are acknowledging reality, and the reality is that Trump is being horrifically irresponsible.

[down] Ok, that makes sense.

[up]Pretty sure that response to memmers assuming Trump's numbers will skyrocket. Because they only seem to ever come into this thread to say how they're totally sure Trump is going to win or the like.

I'm pretty sure Muffins is responding to the idea that Trump's poll numbers are going to go up from now on, never mind skyrocket, which doesn't strike me as particularly likely.

First, I was talking to the bloke above me.

Second:

His poll numbers I expect to skyrocket.

Please tell me what has come out this week that makes the above even remotely likely.

Edit: [nja], twice.

[up]x6 Yes but that not how Republicans are going to spin it. It’s their narrative now, ‘don’t worry about Covid, Biden is overblowing the situation, just look at the President.’

This is mostly likely going to severely backfire one way or another for Trump. There is no question about that.

Honestly, only numbers I see skyrocketing as a result are the infection numbers because his fan base might be even less compliant when it comes to safety measures.

Those Republicans are lost causes anyway. Nothing you say will convince them. However, those who are undecided will be pushed more towards Biden.

His poll numbers I expect to skyrocket.

Of for... quit it with the doomsaying. There is absolutely no reason to believe that this will help Trump. No one is going to be convinced by Trump coming out early, especially if it results in disastrous healthcare consequences (as it very well may).

[up]x4 Quite literally the story of this entire presidency.

[up] Agreed, it's getting really annoying and doesn't have a place in this thread.

If you’ve got some evidence that the Republican narrative is going to be believed by people outside the Republican Party I’d be interested to see it.

I'm gonna be honest, I've been expecting Trump to lose against Biden for a while now.

What I didn't expect was Covid-19 sneaking up on him like a surprise entrance with a steel chair.

I've wagered an amount of money correlating to one dollar on Trump winning. If he does, my consolation price will be an entire dollar in winnings.

I'm starting to think I should have wagered more, but like I said, the casinos don't accept wagers on the election anymore.

So here's a question - can Trump actually leave the hospital Against Medical Advice, or would they be able to invoke quarantine regulations to make sure he stays put? Of course, that latter option might rely on whether they'd be willing to do that with the President, who otherwise should be smart enough to actually listen to doctors, but very obviously won't.

Trump has not been declared by a medical professional to be mentally unfit to make decisions regarding his own welfare, so yes, he can leave a hospital against the advice of his doctors. As for whether or not they can enforce quarantine regulations on him . . . [lol]

@ironballs: In practice, he can definitely leave whenever he feels like it. Now, in theory, I don't know, but a good rule of thumb is that people usually can leave hospitals if they want. (Especially since being in hospital isn't necessary to be quarantined.)

That's why you don't say somebody was released from hospital, but that they were discharged. Hospitals aren't jails.
