Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my Tumblr@Pointmaid: No, see, the idea that "high odds" equals "high probability" is a common misconception.
"The odds are high that somebody will die" means the same as "The probability that somebody will die is low."
I did check your link, but nothing in it contradicts what I'm saying here.
But to get back on track, I do wonder what the public reaction will be if somebody that Trump exposed to COVID-19 ends up dying from it.
That's their attempt to flip Obama Derangement Syndrome on its head, because of course they can't admit that it's anything other than a tit-for-tat situation.
One can have basic moral/ethical standards and judge a person by how they satisfy those standards. One can also give credit where it is duly earned while still disliking or condemning other acts.
For example, I've said many times that the administration's support for NASA is a light in the darkness, at least to some extent, but I'm not going to pretend that it makes up for everything else. If it meant not going to the Moon for a few more years, I'd take that gladly for the chance to fix racism, immigration, climate, the economy, prisons, yadda yadda.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Can't Fly me to the Moon if you can't even get out of the house
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes![]()
Well, I also don't think those things are mutually exclusive. NASA's budget is a drop in the bucket against what we spend annually, and it's got among the highest economic returns of any federal spending. I'm not saying we should drop NASA to build roads; I'm saying that being a fan of NASA doesn't get you a pass on horrible behavior in other areas.
Do they really think they'll swing a 5-3 on that? Will they be able to persuade Roberts?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, the White House is probably the best place imaginable to self-isolate. It is already run like a bunker as it is. And it probably has top notch health facilities on location as well.
While I don't think many on the WH staff will die from this, everyone getting sick all at once could be a problem.
So how is the president's first hand experience doing?

It does indeed come off as rather desperate clutching at straws, and I wonder if even Trump's base buys that line.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI might be behind on this but "religious freedoms" as an excuse to not give gay people rights is stupid. IIRC the 1st Amendment is "freedom to practice your religion but you have to let other people practice their religion too", not "freedom to practice your religion at the expense of other people's civil rights". Gay people existing is not an infringement on the amendment at all, and neither is them marrying. Unless gay people existing and getting married is somehow stopping people from practicing or expressing their religion, which is an oppression fantasy made up by the Christian right so they could cry about how all this acceptance and diversity is infringing on their freedom to be ignorant bigots.
Apologies, I'm just very upset today and this did not help much.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrAny expectation of Trump self-isolating needs to take into account the fact that Trump has a button on his desk that summons a staffer to bring him a Diet Coke. To bring him a Diet Coke, specifically. Not just generically summons a staffer to come ask him what he needs. It is the designated Bring Trump a Diet Coke button.
You really think he's not going to use it for two weeks?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. They are not stupid - they are just pandering to their base. In this situation, their base is delighted at anything that pissess off the what they would derisively call "So called experts". They are in it to Trigger the libs, not to follow, you know, traditional sequential logic.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesWhat's the status on Barret's confirmation, anyway? Haven't really heard to much about it, other than that Mitch apparently still wants to push it through.
Oh God! Natural light!![]()

Several Senators on the approval commitee have tested positive for COVID-19, there may be many more who haven't yet been tested. Some Democrat senators are calling for the vote to be delayed since it could cause another super-spreader event.
I've seen some people on Twitter deride this 'high road' mentality. They seem to take this as suggesting the Democrats in the Senate might abstain from the vote and hand the SCOTUS seat to the GOP for purely principle reasons.
But health-wise, yeah it is pretty reckless to go ahead with the vote now, more and more Republicans keep on testing positive. There's a decent chance Barret herself has been infected.

14 days is the minimum someone must remain quarantined after a suspected infection, as that's about the amount of time it takes to make sure that it has not infected you.
