Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's the "If I vote Green or Socialist/Libertarian or Constitution, Romney/Obama practically gains a vote" problem.
Remember when Nader played that spoiler role in the 2000 election?

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@Rational: Eh, I figured. My dad is the only liberal I know who doesn't get all their political news from Tumblr memes/ Tumblr "social justice" movements (this is a fairly conservative area for California) and I feel that he's forgotten that Obama has broken promises. Or maybe his hatred of Republicans just overcomes EVERYTHING. So yay, more people to talk to.
@Nettacki: I haven't really considered third parties before because I'm pretty much on board with the Democrats in general anyway.
The last battle's curtains will open on stage!Third part votes are useless. The third party supporters only serve to hurt one side and help the other depending on votes.
Untitled Power Rangers StoryNo shit.
For example, there was a gif from the first debate circulating Tumblr. Romney was getting a white thing out of his pocket and setting it on his podium or something. The caption was some panicky thing about how using notes was against the rules and omg please reblog this is soooo important. It had a significant number of notes the last time I saw it, and if we assume that everyone who reblogged it has five or ten followers... yeah.
Even Rachel Maddow, a shining paragon of the right wing, pointed out that it was almost definitely a handkerchief—you can see Romney wiping his face later—and there was no need to get so worked up.
And I haven't been following this thread for very long so if that has already been mentioned, I apologize.

The last battle's curtains will open on stage!I just watched the last 1/3 of the town hall debate.
I get the feeling that we've been underestimating Mitt Romney. Back in the primary season, there were all these comments and news articles about how silly his political strategy is and how wishy-washy his remarks are. For the majority of this year, there was a lot of poking fun at the former governor and his his faltering campaign. The consensus here was that President Obama would easily get reelected and that's for the best. It was reassuring.
Now it doesn't look like he's so gullible. He's not politically incompetent, or at least able to give impression that he isn't. He's able to explain that he does have a plan and a policy to help the nation and its people, and it's probably going to genuinely sway some voters. And given the trend for the past couple weeks, it's not going to be so easy anymore. It's a real contest.
It's easy to look at some periodic news articles about how person X made comment Y and talk about that. Once you actually see the candidates talking, you get a different perception of them. I can definitely see that the debates move voters who are truly undecided but are still interested in the election.
"Once you actually see the candidates talking, you get a different perception of them."
But we have already seen him talking, and he was never this good of a speaker in the Republican primaries.

x3 Yeah why is that?
All this talk back then about Romney being unlikable candidate with little chance of supporters is being put to doubt. Now he's doing well when it's less than a month away from general election when it really matters. This is rather serious.
Ninja link. I'm impressed that it's already up.
Also, here's a winners vs losers
article on it.
@thorn: fuck that noise. "Attacking" is them trying to say why the other is wrong. It's fucking politics. But when you "attack" you better have yor facts right.
Untitled Power Rangers Story@Thorn: It's called debating the fucking points. You never say "vote for my cuz X" it's bad form.
