Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Charles, your friend is amazing.
CNN is breaking that Trump received supplemental oxygen yesterday. That's the step before being put on a ventilator, AFAIK. No link yet.
Regarding the Pence Pardon escape plan, that doesn't protect those who are involved in state level corruption charges.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. The bloodthirsty "an eye for an eye" attitude is disturbing IMO
All due respect to everyone suffering from COVID-19, but nobody deserves to die from COVID-19 moreso than the people who have worked very hard, every day of this year, to maximize the deathtoll from COVID-19.
So, yes, liberals are getting some sense of catharsis from Republican leaders reaping what they've spent the last year sowing.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I saw someone point out that if this was Biden, Trump would be laughing at him during a rally and calling him “breathless Joe” or something like that. And that’s entirely accurate.
I also find it incredibly unsurprising that this happened. This wasn’t bad luck, it was the obvious and natural outcome of Trump and the GOP’s reckless behavior.
But as I said before, I don’t care what happens to him at the end of all this. I just want Biden in the white house, and with him putting Garland on the SCOTUS.
@ Mr Hellboy: I fully agree, and refuse to do so. I wish all those infected to get well, Republican or otherwise, including Trump.
Perhaps especially Trump. I want him to lose the election, face the courts, and brought to account for his crimes.

Catharsis is one thing, but grave dancing is quite another.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest times@Rational: It is, but I’d caution against reading too much into that; cost and access to equipment is no obstacle here, supplements oxygen can improve the comfort of patients with breathing difficulties who don’t strictly need it, and this is a case where doctors really will be taking absolutely every possible precaution.

Garland might be the most appropriate for reasons of irony, but he was already a moderate pick. Not sure he's something particularly desirable.
So I'm checking the text of the 25th amendmend. And here's the thing which a very cynic part of my brain feels the need to point out:
There's no automatic process if the President is incapitated.
There is if he's I. Impeached II. Resigns and III. Dead.
Otherwise its up to Cabinet+VP to remove him if he's unable to do his duties.
So there's literally, and I mean literally, no legal recourse for Trump being put on life support even if he's effectively dead and Cabinet simply refuses to declare him unfit to perform his duties.
"You can reply to this Message!"Just an opinion rather than news, but am I the only who thinks it's kind of ghoulish that so many liberals are laughing at Trump and the other Republicans who have COVID and/or are actively wishing death on them?
You might have a point if these people hadn't spent this entire year doing everything in their power to make the covid crisis worse, on top of every other bit of outright evil they've been committing in that same time frame and longer.
So no, I'm not really inclined to feel bad about anyone saying "Fuck 'em."
Trump caused directly, through policy, the illness and death of thousands.
I don't see why he's deserving of our respect. He's a fascist who's ruined so many lives, I can't exactly work up the energy to care about wanting him to get better.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -Fighteer![]()

I think that would be a constitutional crisis right then and there, and likely no cabinet would want to go there.

Exactly. I can't help feeling catharsis over his fate, and I won't shed a tear over his death, but I find actively wishing death a bridge too far.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesTobias explained my position better on this than I could of.
I feel sympathy for all the doctors and nurses whom have tried their damnedest to fight the virus.
I feel sympathy for the random everyday people that sadly caught it due to unfortunate circumstances despite trying to avoid it.
People peddling misinformation, trying to downplay it. or saying its a hoax though like Trump and his cronies. They have no one else to blame from themselves. My main concern is the potential fallout that will come after whatever happens next.

have you seen these last 4 years.
Constitutional Crisis is the subtitle of this Presidency.
And yes, this specifically included members of Cabinet when they did stuff like order their department members appearing before Congress and stuff.

"You can reply to this Message!"I’ll admit I don’t feel great about wishing death on someone, even if it’s Trump. Perhaps it’s due to my grandmother having passed away recently (not of Covid, mind you), but even if I dislike most of his family, I wouldn’t want them to have to experience that sort of grief.
Now, him resigning, I feel I can solidly get behind.
Regardless, I’d like to see Pence questioned on all of this during the debate - ask him if the White House and the GOP will admit that their response to all of this has been poor, particularly in light of the ACB nomination party.
Oh God! Natural light!I see about 5 people talking about liberals gravedancing for every person actually expressing satisfaction/glee over Trump having COVID. The most common sentiment is that 1) he brought it on himself, with his disregard of health measures 2) the bulk of sympathy should be with those whose lives (through no fault of their own) were destroyed or negatively impacted by COVID due to Trump's inability to have even a shred of care for people who are not himself.
