Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Elizabeth Warren put out a statement
on Trump's sickness, IMO it's far better than Biden's.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted pain on millions of families across the country. My thoughts are with the President, First Lady, White House staff, and anyone else who may have come into contact with the President, and I wish them all a quick and safe recovery.
“My thoughts are also with millions of other Americans who have survived COVID-19 or are still sick. With the more than 200,000 Americans that we’ve lost, including a disproportionate number in Black and Brown communities. With the millions of Americans who can’t get the help they need and who worry about how they’ll pay their bills. With the millions who are up late at night worrying about their babies in daycare or their kids virtually learning at the kitchen table. This is a dangerous moment for parents, for essential workers, for educators, for everyone. We need a government that is on their side and fighting for them.
“The President spent months undermining the work of our doctors and scientists, while he failed to help states and communities contain the outbreak. He mocked people for wearing masks and held super-spreader events that disregarded the health of thousands. Even as this pandemic rages on, he and Mitch Mc Connell grind forward on their plan to steal a Supreme Court seat that will rip health care away from millions of people.
“COVID-19 is deadly. Today’s news should serve as a reminder that listening to scientists, wearing a mask, washing hands, and social distancing are our best tools to fight this horrific disease.”
Yes, she doesn't need to worry about looking bad in an election.
Come on, Biden called Trump the worst President ever during the debate. If that didn't make him look bad then putting out a statement that recognizes the harm Trump has caused wouldn't make him look bad either.
This is a bad argument.

We are talking about a death cult that listens to "FAUX News" and believes "QQQ Conspiracy Theories" to be the ultimate truth.
Common sense and logic doesn't apply if they convince themselves that either the "democrats" or the "illegals" (somehow) "intentionally poisoned the Chosen One" in one way or another.
I mean, the MAGA-cult is completely bonkers, as proven by multiple times...

I agree that Warren’s statement is excellent.
And the latest news release from the AP says, via a leak, that Trump was was administered oxygen on Friday.
Which means we can’t trust any official statement on his condition, because they’ve been downplaying it all along.

x1 - x3: Hey, Warren was just telling it like it is. The facts don't care about the GOP's feelings.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.I'm super torn between rejecting wishful thinking and the default assumption that anything positive the WH says about Trump's condition is the exact opposite of the truth.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I mean, that statement was made before it was revealed that Trump is in very bad shape/could actually be dying. That kind of changes things, and it's a bit strange for you to not acknowledge that.
That it changes thing is a testament to the morally bankrupt faux-civility that too much of our nation is infested with.
But, I do recognize that it is endemic within the US. I understand that Biden has to pander to them regardless of how he feels about it, so I'm not offended that he did.

that voters in Pennsylvania and Florida especially were repulsed by Trump's debate performance and Biden is now up by +7 and +5 in those two states.

They said Friday morning that he had mild symptoms and would be staying at the White House.
Then they gave him a combination of experimental, un-approved drugs (and, reportedly, oxygen), flew him to the hospital, and gave him remdisivir.
Whatever is or is not his condition at the moment, it was definitely more serious than they were claiming.

Or they military decided that they wanted him under their care instead of under the care of doctors who’d give him experimental drugs that might cause more harm then good. We don’t know the details of what’s happening.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAs far as I can see, we're in a state of complete non-information right now. If Trump's condition did deteriorate, we wouldn't hear about it until he was stone-cold dead. It hurts his brand too much to admit any sort of "weakness", regardless of if it comes from a deadly disease, and especially if it's one he's downplayed so much. It's impossible to trust anything his administration puts out about his condition, and it's difficult-to-impossible to verify the credibility of leaks.
So about all we really know is that Trump has the disease and is being treated for it with an experimental treatment at Walter Reed. Is that about the size of it?

We would know if succession were invoked and Pence took over Presidential duties. This would have to occur if Trump were sufficiently incapacitated as to be unable to do his job (to the extent that he does it, anyway). If the White House refuses to use the 25th Amendment even if he's in intubated or in a coma, that's... well, I wouldn't put it past them but it's so far beyond the norms that I won't believe it unless it happens.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Oh, the anonymous source that Trump was in serious condition and possibly dying? Was Mark Meadows.

The Chief of Staff.
Oh this shitshow of a Presidency.

There's a plausible reason for Pence to be acting on his behalf right now, after all.
It's just, after all the lies I can't take anything they say at face value... And they've violated norms and even laws so often that I can see them not following normal procedures on this one.

This thread moves so quickly holy fuck.
I don't necessarily disagree, but what Biden offers is MILES better than what Trump offers and we need SOMETHING to start and get the ball rolling. It's not just possible, but highly likely that he DOES in fact up the green project as president.
Couldn't agree more, anyone who recognizes that Biden doesn't go far enough and decides that we should accept an infinitely worse candidate is frankly an idiot.
