Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Chuck Grassley, the 87 year old senator from Iowa was also at the party / in meetings with people who have subsequently been tested positive.
But don't worry, he's a firm believer in the President's approach to testing. He isn't planning on getting tested - and if you don't have the tests, you don't have the cases.
@Silasw, I think the graphic you're talking about is this one from Politico.
They're updating it as new cases come in.
Full steam ahead; Senate is in recess but committees are still going forward, including Judiciary with Supreme Court nom.
Edit: If they can't reach 50 votes because too many Senators have COVID or need to quarantine, I guess that pushes the timeline back, but Mitch McConnell has said he'll have a vote even in a lame duck session.

Except this was avoidable if it weren't for one of the parties being committed to stupidity.
Nomination might be, this seems like it might screw with the confirmation timing somewhat.
Can't wait to see the turtle's excuse for holding a confirmation vote if the election results indicate no longer having a senate majority for it or the presidency. "But we're not replaced yet so the will of the people is irrelevant."

Don't worry, he'll come up with something absurd.
Mark Meadows immediately contradicted Dr. Conley's words on Trump's condition after the press conference. He tried going off-the-record but a camera caught him.
"The president's vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We're still not on a clear path to a full recovery."
How reassuring.

Though I feel like I already know the answers, where there polls on how people felt the Supreme Court appointment should have gone down during Obama?
I remember recent polls show like 80% or Republicans feel that regardless of the election Trump should be the one to appoint RBG's replacement. Is that just a complete 180 from their positions when Obama was in office. I assume it is, but I'm open to being surprised about that.

Bloody hell. At this point, we shouldn't trust any information coming from official White House channels. Well... we shouldn't have been for a long time, but really not when it comes to Trump's health.

@LBSK, Monmouth did polling in both 2016 and 2020.
It's from Olivia Nuzzi's Twitter feed (she's a reporter for NYMag). Link
Editing to clarify: White House reporters reported the above quote by anonymous source with knowledge of Trump's condition. Then Nuzzi reported a clip of Chief of Staff Mark Meadows immediately after the press conference going off the record with reporters.

The Masque of the Rose Garden list so far:
- Hope Hicks - Trump Senior Council, former Trump WH communications director
- Donald Trump - President
- Melania Trump - First Lady
- Ronna Mc Daniel - RNC chair
- Mike Lee - Republican Senator, UT
- Rev. John Jenkins - president of the University of Notre Dame (attended SCOTUS nomination at Rose Garden)
- Three unnamed journalists and one unnamed WH staffer
- Thom Tillis - Republican Senator, North Carolina was at WH on Sat
- Kellyanne Conway - Former White House counselor, attended Rose Garden event
- Bill Stepien - Trump Campaign Manager
- Ron Johnson - Republican Senator, Wisconsin
- Chris Christie - Former Republican NJ Gov. Helped prepare Trump for debate.

Senators Josh Hawley, Marsha Blackburn and Deb Fischer were all at the party. I think they're being tested. Bill Barr was also there and has tested negative (?)
I'm seriously worried here, though, because they've been conducting Senate business as normal. Who knows how far this might have spread?
