Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Now, if my name were a patronymic, I definitely wouldn't give my son the root as a given name. But then, I am not nor will I ever be a parent.
My musician pageBiden wasn’t at the event, his only contact with anyone from the event is the debate interaction I believe, which was conducted at distance. Plus we still haven’t actually got certainty that Trump didn’t infect him at the debate.
How Pence’s dodged it I don’t know, though he may not have.
Didn’t Biden and Trump walk relatively close to enough other when coming on stage at the debate?

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranTransmission depends on a number of things, including how much viral load is passed to the noninfected person and whether it gets absorbed (for instance, if you only get some on your shoes and you don't touch your shoes, you've been exposed, but you're probably safe). It's not an either-or proximity thing, so Biden, while he's still not confirmed 100% safe, also isn't 100% infected just because he was near Trump.
It's been fun.@Silasw, but ninja'd: Generally, I don't think 'walk near someone for five seconds with neither coughing or sneezing on the other' is considered that high risk. I think for contact tracing they ask for people you've been in close contact with for 5+ minutes?
EDIT: But if they didn't even do that, as others are saying (I didn't actually see the debate, can't stand to hear Trump talk); apparently 12 feet in a large, well-ventilated space isn't that bad. I wouldn't want to test it myself, but still.

Yeah, let's not overestimate the contagiousness. This is a bad disease, but it's not Captain Trips.
Okay, my sense of time is completely out of whack this year, but Trump's doctor just said that he is "just 72 hours into the diagnosis now." [1]
Has it been 72 hours already since the announcement that Trump has COVID? Or did they know he had the virus and not tell people?

I think its possible they knew he had the virus or had a strong feeling that he was at extreme risk and assumed announcing at the wrong time would be a bad idea, for anyone else it would be different but since he's the president..yeah.

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverI have heard health advice to the effect that biking or walking within 5 feet is not a risk factor: it is prolonged closeness that makes risks go up. So just walking within 3 feet of someone for a moment is unlikely to infect you, especially when you don't talk or cough/sneeze.
Considering historical precedent, the fact that we are hearing anything at all while it happens is already quite extraordinary.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesSo, who do you guys think will get it next? We've gotten so many confirmations so fast, it feels like the universe is definitely going for Laser-Guided Karma here.
"In a move surprising absolutely no one"

Not to rehash, but while I'm happy for anyone who hasn't gotten Covid, but I really don’t get how Biden and Pence didn’t get it if so many other people did who were at that event or interacted with people who were. . Hopefully those tests aren’t false negatives.
Biden isn't quite out of the danger zone yet, because IIRC in the early days, tests can still come back negative. It's why the quarantine period is there.
