Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Ignoring blue state victims only makes Trump callous, not murderous, and appointing Kushner alone does not make him responsible for Kushner's decisions (also, Stalin used the would-be Holodomor as a way to exterminate farmers and peasants he thought were saboteurs, he wasn't merely callous about it)
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHe was malicious about his stupidity and ignorance, arguments on the use of the term of mass murder aside he was for the most part responsible for those 200,000+ Covid victims dying.
If he for example just shut up and let the medical professionals handle the crisis we would of been much better off but he has done nothing but downplay it, make bidding wars out of the ventilators, threaten with no sending aide to blue states, downplay it, make racist bullshit out of it, and so much more.
Stupidity and ignorance only goes so far until it becomes being actively malicious.
"Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has tested positive for coronavirus after being exposed to someone with the virus earlier this week, according to his spokesman, making him the third GOP senator to test positive in 24 hours and threatening the quick confirmation prospects of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court."
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Whether or not Trump dies is, to me, irrelevant. I just hope that him (and all these other Republican politicians) are out of commission as a result of their own foolish actions for long enough that it stops the SCOTUS vote and makes it easier for Biden to win.
Either they get better or they don’t. Regardless of that, I’m just hoping for some gains on our end.
EDIT: And now there’s a third person. I doubt it’ll be the last. If this does stop the SCOTUS vote, then good. They weren’t being fair about it, so the universe stepped in and made them play fair.

Are we really sure malice wasn't involved, though? Callous disregard for life? He and his subordinates gave direct orders that directly led to deaths. Just because he didn't execute people in cold blood doesn't mean he isn't responsible.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I think, at the very least, he is guilty of manslaughter
(malice isnt required)

Withholding aide to ailing states just because they hurt his feel feels by criticizing him is enough of an intent for me.
I am pretty sure most other presidents, whether they liked their critics or not, would of tried to give aide to as many parts of the US that they could spare aide too.

Plenty of European countries had horrific outbreaks and death tolls even though their governments were sincerely trying their best to control the pandemic. Canada’s had it bad too, though not as bad as the US (yet - we’re into a very bad second wave). Even with a competent government the US could still easily have had a high death toll.
Some of the deaths are definitely Trump’s fault and the fault of Congressional and state-level Republicans, especially the ones from the summer peak caused by opening up too early and completely. But the majority aren’t attributable to gross negligence and selfishness, they’re attributable to this thing being incredibly hard to control.

Former NJ Governor Chris Christie tested positive for COVID. Link to his twitter.
He was also an attendee of Amy Coney Barrett's nomination party.

Not to rehash, but while I’m happy for anyone who hasn’t gotten Covid, but I really don’t get how Biden and Pence didn’t get it if so many other people did who were at that event or interacted with people who were. . Hopefully those tests aren’t false negatives.
Like they rolled a natural 20 right?
I find it scary having no sense of when/if being around people is safe.

Trump did outright say that the US was looking great on coronavirus numbers if you ignore blue state victims, which is close enough.
It's been fun.
