Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well yeah that's what I figured. I think there's a lot more useful idiots on the left than you would expect. I've met some anarchists who were really cool, but it was really frustrating how they seemed to almost worship Julian Assange like he was some hero for free speech and journalism and not some Russian sockpuppet

You can be mad at multiple people at once, what matters is whether or not Dems deserve it.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
Yup, the far-left is diverse enough as a group that you'll always get good and bad takes.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI swear the entirety of the KPD were reincarnated into this generation en masse somehow...
And it convinces me that a lot of Socialists stumbled onto the right answer by chance, rather than intelligence.

"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Ah I see, the Communist Party of Germany that directed most of its attacks towards the German Social Democratic Party, deriding them as fascists, before ironically being banned the day after the Nazis took power
Jeez that does sound depressingly familiar. And they were funded by Russia too!

Nothing; it's a good start. Some people won't be happy until we tear down our cities and live in grass huts.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I think the gist of it is that his goals for reducing the country's carbon footprint are too far in the future to make a meaningful difference
It's a good START, but we needed a start 20 years ago. At the point we're at now, drastic measures are desperately needed, but sadly this does not seem politically feasible

I get not being satisfying with Biden, I don't really get why anyone would think not voting either way is somehow more helpful than trying to get people in who at least acknowledge the problem and then working to get them to more where you want them to be. Versus the people who just flat out do not and will not share any common ground with you.
This is your regular reminder that most people on the left, including prominent voices like Chomsky are very much pushing for Biden.
The voices you see on Twitter should always be viewed in the context of the very small following they have in reality.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt's not that they think its helpful, it's that they do not believe it will make any difference. This kind of sentiment is actually what Trump's campaign has been trying to foster as a deterrent to voters who are more likely to vote Democrat. Buy yeah, they are a relatively small (if loud) minority. Sometimes though that's all it takes

The vast majority of Bernie supporters are still voting Biden remember, so this is a loud minority, and Biden's doing well in the polls. I don't think that cadre of perpetually online dipshits will swing it.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Maybe not. But not all votes are equal. Remember, Trump lost the popular vote by several million votes, but he was still able win the electoral vote. If enough people living in key voting districts are either unable to vote or decide not to vote since they think it won't make a difference, that could have a huge impact on the electoral outcome.
That being said I haven't actually seen much activity from Bernie Bros lately. I guess a more concerning factor would be the direct voter suppression Trump has tried to do by dismantling the Post Office, but that's old news at this point

I have said this before but I don't really think that the hardcore "never biden" left is particularly statistically significant. I would be much more worried about voter suppression/intimidation and supreme court shenanigans than them making a difference at the end of the day.

For what it's worth, I would say a serious thing to consider are more fence-sitters who see both sides as awful. My brother, for example, mentioned that he believes both Biden and Trump are pure evil, though he's voting for the former out because he thinks he'll hand out more money to him basically.
Leviticus 19:34You would think that this is the moment where the Enemy Mine trope take full effect. Trump and multiple important GOP members are either incapacitated or at the risk of being incapacitated and as a result, the Republicans are in chaos. This is a golden opportunity. At least, those people seem to be just a vocal minority I guess.
I'm not as witty as I think I am. It's a scientifically-proven fact.Looks like he tweeted for the first time since announcing the diagnosis

If you're going to get mad at someone, get mad at the Republicans.
Don't hate the people slightly different.
