The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Per the Meet The Press official Twitter account:

NEW: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not informed of President Trump's planned movement to Walter Reed, a Democratic aide tells @kasie. She has not had any further conversations about continuity of government planning with the White House in the intervening hours, the aide said.

It's highly improbable that the line of succession would reach Pelosi

Both Trump and Pence would have to die so close to each other that the Senate couldn't rush through approving another VP. And I can guarantee that they could do it in under 24 hours if there was the tiniest risk of that occurring.

My guess is that this is just a case of making sure the Speaker of the House stays reasonably informed of all situations involving a risk of Presidential succession, which is something that should always be the case.

I predict if Mitch isn't dead that he will go insane at the idea of Pelosi being in the succession.

There is an irony in Trump spending months mocking Biden for wearing a mask, not holding giant rallies, and "hiding in his basement" right up to the debate.

And now Biden's doing a whistle stop tour and resuming safe canvassing while Trump is in quarantine.

Seeing multiple reports coming in now that the Biden campaign is pulling all attack ads for the remainder of the election cycle.

While a classy gesture, this is also not the best sign. I'm starting to wonder if Trump's condition may be more serious than the WH and news media are letting on, with the walk to the helicopter being a smokescreen of sorts (not a dissimilar scenario to FDR's health issues).

[up][up][up] It might just be out of an abundance of caution. If it turns out to be a mild case and a week or two from now Trump is back up and running Biden can reassess, but if Trump doesn't make it then Biden can't really engage in anything that could be construed as gravedancing.

And honestly this might actually be the best move politically regardless. Anyone who can possibly be convinced that Trump was a lunatic got convinced by the debate. Biden will probably gain more votes by focusing on what he will do for America after being elected.

I'd still consider it a smart play, as one of the single biggest gripes I've heard about the first debate was how uncivil both of them were. I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that the best counter is positive Biden stuff, as negative Trump stuff is all over the place.

[up][up]It's really weird, through all this drama I haven't actually looked that deeply into what Biden's platform is, beyond the fact that he adopted several of Bernie Sanders' policies after the primary election. I guess to me it didnt warrant as much attention, considering the alternative

I'm sorely tempted to say Satan's about to come calling the President on at least 40 years of unpaid bills.

At any rate, I'm sickened that it takes Laser-Guided Karma on someone consistently downplaying the seriousness of COVID-19 for some people to snap back to their senses. Seriously, even I thought Biden got a bit too caught up in the politics of name-calling last Tuesday, and I'm pro-Biden myself.

On the other hand, it's gratifying to finally have someone important say what we're all thinking: that Trump should shut up.

Speaking purely for myself, I'm in a similar boat. Biden's and Trump's actual policies never really entered into it for me for the simple reason that Donald Trump is an incompetent boob who proves weekly, if not daily, that he has no business in the Oval Office. There is nothing so terrible about Joe Biden that it makes a second term of Trump the more appealing choice.

Some people seem to have the weird idea that since Biden is a centrist, his presidency will be just as bad Trump's since nothing meaningful will change and it will just be a return to what was already a harmful status quo. In any other election those people might have a point. But considering the alternative . . .

Let's just say I have some suspicions about where these leftist talking points are actually coming from

Biden's platform is the most progressive of any Democrat's. Including Obama's.

While YMMV on if its progressive enough, calling it centrist is wrong.

Not progressive enough for some people, it seems. That's a really frustrating thing I've noticed about the political left, in general.

The problem isn't viewing his platform as not progressive enough, when it comes to Climate Change incrementalism just isn't good enough, rather the issue is that they lack the minimum level of self-preservation to understand that letting a fascist who clearly hates democracy and leftism win is not an acceptable cost of voting for someone who kind of sucks.
