The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If we assume Trump did have mild symptoms this morning, the virus has this thing of having a fast onset.

The reporting around the story seems to suggest he was symptomatic from Wednesday night, showing fatigue and lethargy.

I'm figuring it's just a precaution to play safe. But regardless of the severity, I hope he feels as miserable with the symptoms as he's allowed everyone else to be through his own mishandling of the situation.

Thorough and scary article from The Atlantic on Biden's chances of getting it.

Definitely seems like he could still develop it, unfortunately, because false-negative tests are apparently very common right after infection.

How bad does Trump's health have to be before Pence invokes the 25th Amendment?

I imagine being confined to a hospital bed indefinitely will would be solid grounds for the 25

[up][up][up][up]What do you mean?

That he is going to that specific hospital or that he is being hospitalized at all?

The latter is pretty big news, the former is pretty standard for the POTUS.

Walter Reed is the de facto medical institution for Presidents. That's an historical fact. It means nothing except that he's receiving care in a hospital setting.

The 25th Amendment requires a declaration from a majority of the Cabinet that the President is unable to execute the duties of his office. It doesn't make reference to any specific diagnosis or condition. Historically, it means they are under anesthesia or sedation in such a way that they are not aware and able to give orders.

ETA: I cannot wait to hear what Rachel Maddow has to say about this tonight.

When this was last brought up (I think in reference to Rod Rosenstein invoking the 25th) is that while it takes the whole cabinet to invoke the 25th the President can unilaterally revoke the 25th.

Effectively meaning that the President has to be physically or mentally unable to counter the decision of the cabinet in order for the 25th to stick.

Edit: I knew uninvoke wasn't the right word. Changed to revoke.

[up][up] It takes half the Cabinet plus the Vice President, not the whole cabinet.

And if the President countermands the cabinet, Congress then then has the option of removing the President by 2/3rds majority in both houses.

This would be a higher bar then traditional impeachment, so it realistically would only be used in a situation where the President managed to stammer out "I am capable of severing as President" in a message to Congress but literally no one bought it.

I'm waiting for the announcement from McConnell that the Senate will permit remote voting in order to minimise possible exposure to the virus...

...in a complete 180 from his decision 6 months ago if I recall correctly.

[up][up]Cheers for the additional detail, didn't realize there was another step that could be taken.

CNBC also relayed the info that Trump is going to Walter Reed, though it should be noted that it could genuinely be as a precautionary measure - as in the symptoms are still mild, but better to get him there before shit hits the fan rather than while it's worsening.

I'm all for this being a secret plan for Trump to resign due to health reasons and escape to Russia with a Pence pardon.

That would be nice.
