The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I hope the Bidens are okay.

Whatever happens to him, he deserves it. He doesn’t take care of himself.
Being honest, I don't think that's the reason most people would say trump deserves what's happening to him, but it is probably true, also.

@ Septimus - That's what I would hope was meant, and I think it's a decent answer (although I think the reality is that Trump is the leader of the party, not a figurehead).

But I'm not sure that's what the other poster meant.

Edit- Nevermind.

An important thing to note about Pence is that he doesn't really inspire servile loyalty in the GOP's cult of a base. Not the way Trump does.

Pence is white bread, a null, a blank space. The only thing passionate about him is his zealous, regressive evangelical beliefs, so he'd certainly appeal to that part of the GOP base. He has nothing much else to offer, though, besides a penchant for corrupt behavior in office.

He's the sort of person who would never headline a ticket because he just isn't exciting enough.

So people wouldn’t be invested enough in him to vote for him? That’s a good thing.

He largely joined the ticket because he was about to lose his last job as Governor of Indiana. Which is a rather red state...

Probably not, but they might vote for Pence to keep Biden out of the White House. Negative voting is a big part of US elections these days.

Biden getting tested for COVID:

(CNN) - Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, are being tested for coronavirus on Friday morning, following President Donald Trump's disclosure that he had tested positive just days after the first debate.

There was no contact from the Trump campaign or the White House to alert the Biden campaign of possible exposure, a senior Biden campaign official who was with the former vice president at the debate said. That aide said Biden's campaign believes there is not much risk because "we were never near them."

Biden was scheduled to travel to Michigan on Friday. It was not immediately clear Friday morning whether that trip would take place.

The former vice president tweeted well wishes for Trump and first lady Melania Trump, who also tested positive.

"Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family," Biden tweeted Friday morning. Biden's running mate, California Sen. Kamala Harris, tested negative for coronavirus Thursday "as part of the campaign's routine testing of principals," a Biden campaign aide said.

Biden campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon sent the campaign's staff an email Friday morning instructing staffers not to post about Trump's positive test on social media.

O'Malley Dillon also told Biden's campaign staff to "rest assured that our campaign staff, in consultation with health experts have continued to take every precaution to protect Vice President Biden, Sen. Harris, their spouses and our staff. The health and safety of the entire team has been, and will remain, our number one priority."

At Tuesday night's debate, after Trump's entourage of family and administration officials entered without masks, a Cleveland Clinic doctor approached Trump's guests, asked them to wear masks and offered masks to them, according to a reporter who observed what was happening in the room before the debate.

Well, there's already suspicion going around that Trump is faking this in order to come out two weeks later "miraculously cured" by hydroxychloroquine. I doubt it.

It's been fun.

The sad part here being that, if the roles had been reversed, we all know what Trump would have sent him instead for thoughts and prayers.

And I dare not type that kind of message down, because that would be nothing but an act of true evil.

Both Pence and Harris have reportedly tested negative. So, provided that holds this means that the VP debate may still take place.

Which brings me to a point of mine that may have been missed - after the debacle of the first debate it may actually elevate the importance of the VP debate. Pence isn't going to be able to "dominate" the debate against Harris like Trump did verses Biden. So at a basic level you'd get a more civil debate which may appeal to more voters in general.

On a broader view however - Harris has an opportunity to grill the establishment Republican party that Pence represents. Put it this way - no one has ever been able to pin down a Republican Senator on their views on Trump for an extended period of time. As has been observed, they have gotten extremely skilled in jumping into elevators to avoid reporters. On the debate stage however, Pence won't be able to escape. And so Harris can really ask - why have you constantly made excuses for this man? Why do you enable him in the face of how he has consistently gone against your stated values? At long last sir, have you no sense of decency?

It's basically the only chance that the Democrats have to put the Republican Party writ large under the spotlight.

White House official to me: • “No new guidance from WH management” since news of Trump’s positive test • Mask wearing at WH still optional • Staff only gets tested if they have a mtg with POTUS or VP that day

Masks still optional?????!!!

What the fuck.

Unfortunately, Mike Pence has actually given many a coherent speech in defense of Donald Trump and is in fact the President's go to guy for speeches that require enormous 1984-esque leaps in logic. I had the misfortune of watching Mike Pence's address to evangelical leaders about why it was important to continue their support of Donald Trump despite the latter being a human wasteland.

Masks still optional?????!!!

I don't think people quite get how much avoiding the perception of weakness is the heart of fascism.

The one silver lining for Trump is that this shifts the news cycle away from his disastrous debate performance.

I seriously doubt this will garner much in the way of a sympathy vote/surge.
