The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Exactly, the problem is not that Trump does not care about his health, he does, it's just that he has a rather common misconception about how the body works that causes him to not want to exercise. Add to that his fear of being poisoned, causing him to only trust fast food, an dit's no wonder he is unhealthy despite wanting to be.

Also this from CNN:

The diagnosis amounts to the most serious known health threat to a sitting American president in decades. At 74 years old and obese, Trump falls into the highest risk category for serious complications from the disease, which has killed more than 200,000 Americans and more than 1 million people worldwide.

Man the Civil War was a fucking bloodbath.

While we have surprisingly made off with relatively little casualties in those wars.

Yeah, civil wars tend to be especially terrible.

His infection with the disease could prove destabilizing in an already fraught political climate, and stock market futures tumbled on news of Trump's infection.

This is basically why I'm not exactly jumping for joy right now at this news. It may feel like justice, but this is just plain bad for everyone.

I mean, he probably eats other things as well, but yes, mainly fast food, the idea being that fast food is made on the spot and is not easy to poison since you can get it from public places and there is no way to know who will get what when. This is not a recent thing either, apparently he was already well known for this habit before he became president.

Also, it's easier to rack up a high body count for the country that comes out the other end of the war when both sides count towards the death toll.

That said, the Union and Confederacy each suffered more deaths than Covid has caused, even if only around a third of those were actual deaths in battle and not disease or dying in horrible POW camps or other assorted causes. It was an absolute bloody mess of a war and we still haven't gotten over it.

In non-coronavirus Trump news, it looks like Ivanka received consulting fees from the Trump Organization while acting as an employee, which might lead to her being charged with tax fraud.

“Trump’s private records show that his company once paid $747,622 in fees to an unnamed consultant for hotel projects in Hawaii and Vancouver, British Columbia,” the Times noted. “Ivanka Trump’s public disclosure forms – which she filed when joining the White House staff in 2017 – show that she had received an identical amount through a consulting company she co-owned.”

I sincerely don't want Trump to pass away from the virus. I want him to survive the elections, lose, get humiliated on live TV, get dragged away by the Secret Service goons kicking and screaming, and then get thrown in jail for all the stuff he's done. That would be karma I think, not just dying and leaving the others to deal with the mess he's done.

Sure, there would be riots, but at this point they're inevitable, or at least I can't think of any outcome that could prevent them.

It could end up making the riots worse, though. The election is already a powder keg as it is. I don't want to imagine how the alt right will react when Trump dies and Biden pretty much wins by default because no one is going to vote for Pence.

I can already hear the conspiracies about Biden assassinating Trump with the virus or somesuch... No, we absolutely do not want Trump to die.

Wow, what the hell did I wake up to? I admit to being less than upset about Trump contracting the virus, and while I have to abide by the same rules that we set for everyone, I too am thinking the same thoughts you all are.

How poetic. How karmic. How potentially disastrous if the White House has a total meltdown over this. At this point, that concerns me far more than whatever his base decides to believe or not believe, do or not do.

I want Trump to lose the election fair and square. If he loses because he got COVID, that's going to cast doubt on the process, but at the same time I want him out of office far more than I care about whatever conspiracies people cook up about the election's legitimacy or fairness.

The point is that such conspiracies could provoke more violence. Trump's death would just make a bad situation much worse.

And yes, I want him out of office too, but not at all costs.

Trump dying at this point would just make him a martyr. We would get neverending "if trump were still alive" takes. Better for him to fizzle out.

I think that violence may end up being inevitable no matter what. The extreme right has been stirred up, empowered, given a voice. It's not going to sit meekly down and endure another eight years (or whatever) of being ignored and suppressed.

We've been brewing our little domestic insurgency in a pressure cooker for decades. It's going to pop sooner or later. Maybe we need to get it out of the way sooner.

ETA: If we let the threat of their potential violence drive our choices, we've surrendered to them already.

Wow, and I thought I was being sombre this morning.

[up][up][up] You should care insofar as public and personal safety is concerned. These people are far more dangerous than just being conspiracy nuts on the internet at this point.

I agree we should not let the threat of violence drive our choices, but we should not disregard it either. Trump dying would be like a lit fuse into the powder keg.

There will be extremists trying to force the end they envision yes. But police will be less bold to assist the racists if Trump loses. Qanon will be disillusioned for a while at least, weakening the movement.

Its better than trump constantly endorsing the latest terrorists and encouraging the police to do nothing.

I'm not sure Qanon would disappear so easily if Trump died. The movement has grown well beyond Trump, and beyond the US as well. It is not going away any time soon.

[up] Exactly. We cannot let these groups dictate our political choices, even indirectly.

Part of the problem is that Trump's administration has effectively stopped law enforcement efforts to suppress alt-right extremism. Biden's administration would remedy that quickly.

Isn't that obvious? You keep going on about how doing X or Y might provoke them to violence. If we choose not to do X or Y because of that, we have conceded to these groups. We can prepare and work to mitigate their potential acts, but we must not let what we do be decided by how it will motivate extremists.

No, I have not been saying that. What I have been saying is that Trump dying in office could cause more violence during the election. That is not exactly an action, is it?

Of course we should not let violence dictate our actions, and do everything we can to mitigate that. I have never said otherwise.
