Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's about right. September data will be released tomorrow.
The damned queen and the relentless knight.Testing doesn't guarantee you aren't sick; it just means you aren't carrying enough viral load to be detectable at that time. This should be well-known.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Melania Trump on tape:"Fuck them kids and fuck Christmas"
Oops.
The War on Christmas is coming from in the White House

That is Actually Pretty Funny. That's like a parody of the worst thing you could possibly say on tape: fuck kids and fuck Christmas!
So what was the context, anyway?
Link does not work, or the tweet is already gone.
Edit: okay, fromw hat I can gather here
, this is not what she actually said at all. She apparently said that Christmas decorations are stupid, and that nothing can be done about separated kids. So that tweet was rather misleading.
Edit 2: Apparently it was based on this 2018 recording, and it was a bit stronger than resetera suggested:

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI'm really feeling what I said earlier about reading and citing primary sources. Can we please not use the right's playbook and check our facts before posting? Also, how is this news if the clip was from 2018?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There was an idea once that she was something of a quiet rebel inside the house, and that she was "trapped" and silently calling for help through various messages.
People also felt sympathy for her due to how terrible her husband treats her, so that translated to this idea that she would be opposed to his politics.

Yeah that sounds like people deluding themselves, she always unapologetically exemplified the worst stereotypes about the Nouveau Riche from the getgo, down to her plagiarisms of Michelle Obama and her fake-out attempts at concern for cyberbullying.
Trump treating her like that is indeed terrible, I'm not the sort of person who would wish domestic abuse upon people I personally dislike, but then again it's not as if she wasn't a shameless Gold Digger who never tried to hide it.

I'm not exactly shocked to my core that Melania is revealed as an awful human being. A Trump-supporting co-worker of mine once told me that she'd be an advocate for the rights of women and of disabled people; that she'd "humanize" Trump in office. I really want to go rub this in her face.
Ballots are secret. Vote for whoever you want and lie if you have to.

NYTimes:
QAnon believers are sending death threats to Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ7) after the NRCC released fake ads accusing him of lobbying to protect predators.
QAnon believers seized on an advertisement released last month by the campaign arm, the National Republican Congressional Committee, that falsely claimed that Mr. Malinowski, then a lobbyist for Human Rights Watch, worked to block a provision in a 2006 crime bill that would have expanded registration requirements for sex offenders.
I... don't think this was an accident. The Republican Party is now pandering to QAnon supporters.
