The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So I guess Texas is now REALLY out of the question. That screws over cities and cities are primarily where Democrats live... and nobody can/will stop them.

Can this be challenged? I know its a long shot, considering the make up of the courts.

We aren't relying on Texas to win the White House, but this systematic voter suppression is something that Biden's administration (assuming he has one) will have to address as an overwhelming priority.

Sadly you're probably right, thankfully we don't need Texas to win.

With Biden refusing to reject the filibuster I think if we take the Senate there is a very good chance that we'd get an electoral reform bill that would force Texas' Republicans to stop being undemocratic fuckwits.

Hell isnt the Texas State House also in play? If Dems can take that they can prevent a gerrymander for redistricting.

[up][up][up]Just re-read the article, and yes it isn't one polling station for 5 million voters, just one drop off location for mailed in ballots.

Better, but the old Traitor States never should have been released from the VRA.

No, because if the Texas Legislature cannot agree on a redistricting map a committee dominated by the governor does it instead.

[up][up][up][up][up] Oh, they're working on that too, with their poll station police.

My suggestion is get a bunch of trucks and people to pick up ballots to deliver them.

In essence, it's a continuation of their attempts to find a way to appoint a slate of electors directly rather than using the voting outcome, by setting up a committee to investigate "election fraud" and giving it subpoena powers etc., including starting it up before the election rather than even allowing the election to happen first.

Ergo, they're looking for a way to manufacture an excuse by election day.

My suggestion is get a bunch of trucks and people to pick up ballots to deliver them.

In a number of states that is a crime. As you’d have partisan political actors handling ballots, and handling lots of them. That opens up a lot of actual possibilities of fraud, as happened with the one congressional race in 2018.

Yep but if it's not, every effort to make sure as many votes are delivered as possible should be made.

Or getting people to physical vote with masks and protection.

Not an inch can be given.

[up][up][up][up] Wait, I thought linking to external sources was encouraged; otherwise, we’d have no verifiable sources for our info.

[up]X4 Now that I think might be allowed, as it wouldn’t even be escorting people to the polls (which I think has limitation in some parts of the US) as you’re just helping them mail something.

[up] Providing a source is encouraged, posting simply a headline style link is not. The basic idea is to make your own statement but back it up with a link, not copy-paste a headline like we’re Reddit.

Well, it wasn't a quoted headline, it was an overly abbreviated summary of what's going on. Same result.

One positive I’ll note from that article is that the Democrat leader in the Pennsylvania legislator outright called the Republican plan a coup, if they actually try it he will hopefully follow through and ask the governor to respond the way one would normally with a coup, by sending in the national guard.

Pennsylvania's governor is a Democrat, any attempt to appoint elector would be immediately vetoed. There is absolutely no way for it to work.

The problem is not getting voters to the polling stations, the problem is maintaining safety at the polling stations. And when Trump is calling on militias to physically monitor polling stations, that is a real big problem. No one is going to be able to vote when there is a riot in progress at the polling station.

Also Mitch has indicated that he’s not going to go along with such a plan, so which really kneecaps such an idea.

[up] We were also talking about ballot drop-boxes, which I don’t believe are being targeted for ‘guarding’ just yet.

Still, they're getting more brazen with this, huh? I'm not super worried about them pulling it off, but I am actually getting curious about the chances of at least a few states trying to go "we reject your reality" if the results don't fit Republican narrative.

[up]x4 Well, it shouldn't work, but it could still end up with a completely bizarre situation where you have two slates of electors sent, but only one has the correct (normal) signatures... which is obviously an intent to discredit the election.
