Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think Trump's best play for the second debate would be to try and force the hand of the next moderator. We've seen the discussions from the Presidential Debate Commission about changing the format. So let's say something does change e.g. - the moderator can cut the microphone if they feel the need to.
As soon as that happens Trump should blow up, state that he never agreed to this, that this is censorship, this is a clear conspiracy against him and that the debate process is just as fraudulent as the election is going to be.
In other words use the debate as a dress rehearsal for what he is going to do after the election. Or, to use the rugby expression, try and get your retaliation in first.
Trump isn't going to win a policy battle with Biden - because Trump can't be trusted. If Trump offered Medicare for All, the left wouldn't take it. The suspicion runs too deep. Likewise he won't win it on a question of character. Trump only had fitness for office (in the medical sense) and left wing scaremongering / vote splitting. Both of which Biden successfully dealt with.
Indeed, if Trump offered anything good it could only backfire on him. The left wouldn't trust him and his own base would feel betrayed.
Some may remember Machrystal from his Roman à Clef portrayal in the Netflix movie War Machine, in which he's played by Brad Pitt.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."From Vox, Joe Biden’s most surprising, and possibly important, answer of the debate
It covers how important Biden's refusal to disavow abolishing the filibuster is and how other Democrats have begun to shift in the same direction.
Heh, called it.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangBernie was far too tepid, accepting stasis just to stop the Republican is deeply counterproductive when we have existential threats on the horizon.
I think I missed that part, but yeah, that's a good thing.
Understandable, it was almost literally a "blink and you'll miss it" moment.

He is, but he also opposed abolishing the filibuster. A distinctly unradical position.
It's a sign of how powerfully institutions can capture individuals and limit their thinking. Bernie is radical but he's also a Senator for decades and that often comes with blindspots.

To put this into perspective, Harris County is about 500 square miles larger and about 4 times the population than Rhode Island.
To get from the intersection of TXSH 146 and NASA Parkway in Seabrook (the southeastern most city in the county) to the Harris County Clerk's Office in Downtown Houston takes about 36 minutes, when the nearest Clerk Annex is about 14 minutes. And that assumes they'll do the downtown building. They might do it at NRG Park, which is only a couple of minutes less for the above.
From US 290 and FM 362 in Waller in the northeastern part of the county, it takes about 42 minutes to get to the downtown Clerk's Office and 50 to get to NRG Park, with the distance to the two closest Clerk's offices being 33 and 35 minutes respectively.
And I'm not even talking about the other large counties in the state like Dallas, Travis, Tarrant, Bexos, El Paso. Or those like my county (Galveston) where the drop off locations are on opposite sides of the county, one in Galveston at the main Courthouse and one in League City at the North Annex.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."...I have no words.

Well, it is a partisan issue to the GOP, because they rely on white supremacists to vote for them.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I second Redmoss’s concerns that suppression of mail in ballots could narrow the Trump-Biden gap enough that the Supreme Court could swing the election to Trump ala 2000.
