Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If the US doesn’t pass a budget (or a resolution to just use the last year’s budget, called a CR) they shut the government down, in other countries you keep the government functioning but schedule an election.
Was the bill that got passed just a CR keeping funding as it is now? Or an actual budget?

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran> You guys are being very casual about this. I guess it is normal for the US, but it would be complete pandemonium over here if the government was ever in that situation.
casual or restained?,no one is losing their shit in thread because they would quickly get their posts thumped

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverA shutdown was always looking unlikely right now, as Democrats want government functioning so as to care for people, and I’m not sure if Mitch could do his Supreme Court nominee hearings during a shutdown.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranGenerally shutdown are measured in hours or days, not weeks or months. The federal government largely shutting down for a couple days isn’t good, but it’s entirely manageable.

If it happens again, it's horrifying and you wonder who keeps doing this. When it happens the fifth or sixth time, you grab your emergency bag and evacuate in an orderly fashion, wondering why you still live there.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Trump is now denying even knowing who the Proud Boys are.
Ya know, like every other criminal he's been caught associating with.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. So Trump's constant attempts to make Biden "lose the Left" on things like Climate Change got a response from AOC:
Trump doesn' even believe climate change is real."
Biden said that he doesn’t back AO Cs plan, Trump is trying to claim both that Biden is lying and would implement AO Cs plan (which isn’t a plan so much as a set of guiding ideas for making a plan) and that by rejecting AO Cs plan Biden has cost himself the support of left-wing voters.
AOC is pointing out that she’s okay with Biden not backing her plan, she’s enough of an adult to work with Biden on a compromise plan.

I swear, this is a bad comedy.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. From what I read on Wikipedia, the Green New Deal is much bigger than any particular candidate's idea, though, and it also says Biden supports it, so I'm not sure what was going on with him disavowing it during the debate. Or did I misunderstand what was being said?
Indeed, I'd even go so far as to say that he shows more than a passing familiarity to it, both in his quickness to pick up on the name when Biden mentions it, and in calling for them to stand back and stand by. This is not just a name that came up in a government briefing or something. It suggests that he knows at least one member of that particular group.

It's...not even Blatant Lies.

Okay... if this doesn't show Trump is planning a coup, I don't know what will. This seems... concerning.

Indeed, it has been normal for the last three and a half years at the least; I mean, I wouldn't put it past Annoying Orange to shut us down a third time just before his inevitable departure, considering each anniversary of his inauguration not marked by impeachment has been marked with government shutdowns, and the second was even worse than the first, and that was when we weren't staring down the so-called twin-year disease.
