Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even if the whole "going to prison" thing didn't happen, the emotional draw Trump has on his followers would just be bolstered by it. "See? They attacked Trump because the radical antifa liberal Social Justice Warriors are triggered!". It'd just confirm what they already want to believe.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesI'm kind of surprised at how many people are surprised the debate turned out the way it did. There was no way it wasn't with Trump there, and there honestly no insentive for Biden to be significantly more civil then he was. After all Hillary Clinton was more civil and it didn't help her much.
I also can't help but find the foreign pretty eye-roll worthy, as though this degradation of civility in politics has been happening worldwide (and that's before getting into the inherent violence involved in politics).
I will say that I'm surprised Biden was so charitable to Antifa. Not sure if that says anything about how he feels more broadly about the left and its agenda, but it was a pleasant surprise.

I think a lot of this "great debate moments" shenanigans is caused by how debate is presented in movies and cherry-picking examples from history. And let's be honest, a "clean and beautiful" debate is pretty much out of the windows when Trump is one of the participants. There is a reason why professional martial artists in general deem complete amateurs to be the worst opponent.
I'm not as witty as I think I am. It's a scientifically-proven fact.Has or hasn't? It certainly is a concern in my country. Rutte was recently criticized, and apologized for, telling soccer fans to "shut their trap" (in free translation) after they cheered during a soccer match.

That is a good point, perhaps we are expecting too much from debates, though when great moments do happen, they are certainly worth it.
The "senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" moment was brought up as one of those moments yesterday in the program I was watching.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI think what is really behind much of the criticism is that foreign commentators want another Obama, in a sense, someone who can inspire hope and present a better future for America. Obama was huge over here. People expected him to basically usher in a new era of world peace or something. And while that was maybe a tad optimistic, I think there is some real value in that as well. It makes the world feel at ease with who is running the White House, and makes them trust the US more.
And the US certainly needs to rebuild those feelings right now.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesObama is a once in a generation politician, it’s silly to expect such politicians to appear every election.
Here’s the thing, Dutch commentators might want to be inspired and hear about grand plans, but that’s not what the American people want, they want things to become boring again, they want to be able to safely ignore the president, they want to focus on their own lives instead of huge events they have no real control over.
Biden is very good for that.
Based on the bit fo the debate I did watch I’d summarise Biden’s message as “Trump is a liar with no plan or ability to do the job, and it’s his fault things have gone to shit”, which seems like a solid message.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranLet's be honest, most debates are just like most street brawls, it's just two guys pummeling each other in undignified manner, hugging each other while hitting the other guy's head or back or rolling on the ground while yelling and screaming. You just need to replace fist with words. Street brawling looks cool in movies because it's in movies. It got choreography and received editing.
The world doesn't run on storytelling or narrative logic. Just because the future of America and by extension the world because America is so large whenever it move, the rest of the world are dragged along shaken by it, doesn't mean that the debate that could decide its future is going to be dramatic cinematic masterpiece like in Lincoln.
I'm not as witty as I think I am. It's a scientifically-proven fact.@ Silas: I know it is too much to hope for another Obama, but under the circumstances it is understandable that people really want one. The last thing they want is a Trump dictatorship, after all.
That's a good spin on it, I suppose.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesSure but it’s kinda mean of the commentators to disparage a pretty solid and progressive politician (Biden) because he doesn’t mean an absurd standard of being a once in a generation movement leader (which Biden’s generation had with Martin Luther King Junior).
Any word on the federal government being funded? It’s what, 6 hours till it shuts down if nothing is passed?

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranMind you, they don't actually say that they want another Obama, but I think that is the underlying sentiment. They want this guy to be great, because the alternative is so terrible.
Wait, what, it is going to shut down in 6 hours? Talk about burying the lead. So what is the news on that right now? What do they need to pass for it to reopen, exactly?
And how bad is this going to be in the middle of a pandemic if the government does shut down?

Hope shines brightest in the darkest times

Other than going to jail for assaulting a president? Not really, no.
